Conductor
About the Position
Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad is seeking Conductors to assist with the safe movement, switching, and handling of freight trains within yard and road operations. Conductors work as part of a crew responsible for ensuring trains operate safely and efficiently while complying with railroad operating rules and safety regulations.
Pay and Benefits
• Starting pay: Approximately $30 per hour

What You'll Do
• Assist in the safe operation and movement of freight trains
• Receive and follow instructions from dispatchers, yardmasters, or trainmasters regarding train movements and switching assignments
• Perform switching operations including coupling and uncoupling railcars
• Connect and disconnect air brake hoses between railcars
• Mount and dismount railcars using ladders and grab irons to apply or release hand brakes
• Align switches and ensure proper track routing during switching operations
• Read and understand operating rules, bulletins, timetables, train orders, waybills, placards, and other railroad documents
• Communicate effectively with crew members and railroad personnel by radio or in person
• Perform other duties related to train operations as assigned
Work Environment
• Work performed outdoors in all weather conditions
• Walking and working on ballast and uneven terrain
• Exposure to moving equipment, loud noise, and outdoor elements
• Work around heavy railroad equipment and moving trains
Physical Requirements
• Frequent climbing on and off railcars and locomotives
• Walking long distances on uneven surfaces such as ballast
• Bending, stooping, kneeling, and crouching
• Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling equipment or materials
• Ability to safely work around moving trains and equipment
Schedule
Railroad operations run 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Must be willing to work on the extraboard (on-call)
• Employees may receive approximately two hours notice to report for work assignments
• Employees must make themselves available for calls to maintain guarantee pay during a pay period
Union Information
This is a union represented position. After a 60 day probationary period, employees must join the appropriate union and pay union dues.
