Athletic Facility Maintenance Specialist

Responsible for the preparation, maintenance, and presentation of the City's athletic facilities to provide safe, high-quality playing surfaces and grounds for participants and visitors to support recreational programming, tournaments, and special events. Performs specialized sports turf maintenance while assisting with park grounds and other departmental operations as needed.
Under the direct supervision of the Park Maintenance Superintendent.
Prepare and maintain athletic fields and facilities to provide safe, playable, and aesthetically pleasing conditions for practices, games, tournaments, and special events.
Perform sports turf management including mowing, fertilization, irrigation, aeration, overseeding, pest management, and field recovery. Maintain baseball and softball infields including grading, moisture management, edging, lining, mound and home plate repairs, warning tracks, and skin maintenance.
Prepare fields before and after events including lining, dragging, setup, cleanup, and inspections.
Ensures consistent and clear communication and collaboration with the Athletics division for league, tournament, practices, and future planning.
Inspect athletic grounds and facilities to identify maintenance needs, repairs, and safety concerns. Coordinates with Facility Maintenance Division when necessary.
Coordinate and maintain inventory of athletic field supplies, materials, and equipment while obtaining quotes and assisting with purchasing.
Maintain maintenance logs, pesticide application records, irrigation records, and equipment maintenance documentation.
Evaluate field conditions following weather events and recommend closures or reopening of athletic facilities.
Provides daily direction, training, mentoring, and supervision to seasonal employees and assigned staff in proper athletic facility maintenance practices and safe equipment operation.
Assists with maintenance of parks, trails, landscaped areas, and municipal facilities as operational needs require.
Assists Parks and Recreation Department during times of special events.
Operates light duty maintenance equipment such as a zero-turn mower, infield groomer, utility vehicles, and other similar equipment.
Deals effectively and courteously with fellow employees and the public.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Attends in-service training sessions or other training sessions deemed appropriate by supervisor or department head.
Maintains appropriate supplies for assigned area.
Maintains a neat and orderly work area.
Maintains appropriate dress and appearance.
Three (3) years of experience in grounds maintenance, golf course management, sports field management, or similar work. Education in related field can be in place of work experience on a year-for-year basis.
General knowledge of sports turf management; Must be able to make sound leadership decisions within established guidelines and procedures; Must be able to mentally analyze a situation; Must be able to memorize and retain information; Must have cognitive and analytical skills; Must be able to communicate effectively both through verbal and written skills; Must be able to solve problems and make decisions under pressure in areas of responsibility; Must have good organizational and planning skills; Must have basic technology skills, including but not limited to computers.

Must possess a valid Missouri State Driver's License. Must go through Groundskeeper U online groundskeeper training in first six (6) months.
May be required to work a variety of shifts including nights, weekends, or holidays. Subject to emergency call-in. Must be a dependable person due to the small size of the work force. Ability to obtain position specific licenses and certifications as required.
Various equipment including utility vehicles, zero-turn mower, tractor, loader, infield groomer, sprayers, spreaders, and hand tools.
Performs bending and reaching to both ground level and overhead; lifts, carries, pushes, and pulls up to 50 pounds; must be able to hold and grip objects; must be able to stand for prolonged periods; must have use of both arms and legs; must have good lateral mobility.
May be exposed to extreme weather, dust or pollen, toxic fumes, chemicals or smoke, contagious diseases, electrical or mechanical hazards and extreme noise; May have poor ventilation; May work in confined places and awkward positions.
