About the job:
As a Motion Designer for Gemini in Chrome, you will shape the future of AI-powered browsing. You won't just make things move; you will define the physicality and personality of Chrome UI. You will collaborate closely with UX designers, researchers, engineers, and product managers to create seamless transitions, micro-interactions, and expressive visual feedback that helps users trust and understand AI.
The ideal candidate possesses an exceedingly high bar for motion quality, keen eye for detail, and the ability to iterate quickly in fast-moving environments.
Key Responsibilities:
Define AI Interactions: Design motion systems that communicate the state of Gemini (listening, thinking, generating) within the Chrome browser.
Engineering Collaboration: Work side-by-side with Chrome engineers to implement motion specs, ensuring performance and smoothness on desktop hardware.
Ownership of implementation: Test the product and file bugs when the design isn't up-to-spec. Collaborate with engineers to get it there
System Design: Define durable patterns that can be repeated across the interface to create a cohesive motion system
Asset Production: Deliver production-ready assets (e.g. Lottie, Video)
Qualifications & Skills
Experience: 5+ years of experience in Motion Design or related field
Portfolio: A strong reel/portfolio demonstrating UI motion, micro-interactions, and systems thinking.
Expert mastery of After Effects and related Adobe tools.
Communication: Ability to articulate motion decisions based on user needs and technical constraints to cross-functional stakeholders, including design, product management, and engineering
Collaboration: Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams
Bonus Points (Nice to Have)
Experience with Lottie for performant web animations.
Basic understanding of HTML/CSS/JavaScript or familiarity with the Chromium codebase.
AI Experience: Experience designing for AI or experience using AI to design motion
Figma experience. Comfortable working within complex UI systems and component libraries.
Accessibility: Knowledge of accessibility standards in motion (reduced motion preferences, contrast).
Prototyping: Proficiency in tools like Protopie, Figma, or Origami to demonstrate complex interaction logic.
