Mountain Theatre Company , North Carolina’s oldest professional theatre organization, is seeking to hire a Costume Stitcher for SHOWSTOPPERS!. This position will join the experienced, award-winning team behind Western North Carolina's premier professional theatre company.

CONTRACT DETAILS

Production: SHOWSTOPPERS! Venue: Highlands Performing Arts Center Contract Dates: July 26th (Travel Day) - August 13th (Travel Day) Role: Costume Stitcher Project Rate: $2,000 Housing and Travel: Provided/Reimbursement LOCALS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED.
POSITION SUMMARY

The Costume Stitcher (Fittings & Alterations) is responsible for executing precise alterations and tailoring of costumes based on fitting notes, ensuring proper fit, comfort, and performance functionality for performers. This role does not require costume construction or garment building but focuses solely on post-construction adjustments and fitting-related alterations as directed by the costume designer.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Attend costume fittings as scheduled and take accurate fitting notes or follow detailed notes provided by designers.
Execute a wide range of garment alterations, including hemming, taking in/letting out seams, adjusting closures, shortening/lengthening sleeves and pant legs, etc.
Maintain the integrity of the designer’s vision while ensuring comfort and mobility for the performer.
Perform hand and machine sewing with a high level of craftsmanship and attention to detail.
Ensure all alterations are completed on schedule and meet production deadlines.
Maintain clear labeling and tracking of altered garments.
Collaborate with the costume designer to ensure proper fit and continuity across performances.
Perform quality checks on finished alterations and assist with minor repairs as needed.
Maintain a clean and organized work area and follow shop safety protocols.
QUALIFICATIONS
Strong proficiency in garment alterations and tailoring techniques (both hand and machine sewing).
Prior experience in a professional costume shop or wardrobe department is preferred.
Ability to interpret fitting notes and communicate clearly with design and costume staff.
Familiarity with a wide range of fabric types and costume styles.
Strong time management skills and ability to prioritize tasks to meet tight deadlines.
Comfort working in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
Must be able to stand for extended periods and perform repetitive motions with accuracy.
Ability to drive to contract is a plus.
