Volunteer Position.
Time Commitment: 5-7 hours per week
The Assistant Editor works alongside the Journal Director to support a thoughtful and well-coordinated editorial process. By helping facilitate communication among editors, peer reviewers, authors, and the technical team, this role contributes to a fair, timely, and supportive publication experience—one that helps bring meaningful, high-quality work to the broader community.
Responsibilities
Support the Journal Director in coordinating communication across the editorial process, including with editors, peer reviewers, authors, and the technical team
Prepare submissions for blind peer review by anonymizing manuscripts and reviewer feedback to ensure an unbiased process
Review article feedback and assist the Journal Director in the editorial decision-making process
Assist with contributor development efforts, including identifying potential authors and helping coordinate outreach for calls for submissions
Final proofreading of articles prior to publication
Maintain organized records of the review and editorial process for each submission, including key decisions and handoffs
Collaborate with the Communications Team to support engaging social media content for the Journal
Participate in team meetings and maintain consistent communication via Slack and email
Report to the Journal Director
Job Requirements - Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
Familiarity with the publishing or peer review process is an asset, but not required
Preference given to applicants with a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
Preference given to applicants with a background in animal training or behavior
Proficiency with Google Drive, including Google Docs, Sheets, and Shared Drives
Strong organizational and time management skills, with high attention to detail
Ability to communicate clearly and work collaboratively within a remote, diverse, international team
Ability to communicate in a positive, supportive, and encouraging manner
Comfortable using team communication tools such as Slack
