Assistant Band Director

Exempt/Professional Reports to: Principal
Primary Purpose: Assist the Band Director in directing and managing the band program at McMinn County High School and feeder band programs at Calhoun, Rogers Creek, Riceville, E.K. Baker, and Niota. Assist in providing students with appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth and provide opportunities to participate in Marching Band, Concert Band, and Pep Band. When possible, assist with providing opportunities for extracurricular Jazz Band and Winter Percussion/Color Guard. Enable students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in society.
Qualifications: Bachelor's degree Tennessee teaching license with endorsement for area of primary teaching assignment Demonstrated competency in instrumental music Current first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and automated external defibrillator (AED) certification Knowledge of the overall operation of an instrumental music program Knowledge of curriculum and instruction Knowledge of state laws, rules, and regulations governing band programs Ability to assist with budget and personnel responsibilities Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior Ability to interpret data Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills Experience Student teaching or approved internship and band directing experience.
Major Responsibilities and Duties: Instructional Strategies Assist the Band Director in directing instrumental performers, including marching band, orchestra, concert band, soloists, and ensembles. Assist the Band Director in establishing performance requirements, enforcing academic requirements, and verifying each student's eligibility to participate in band. Assist the Band Director in providing for band participation at extracurricular events, including concerts, football games, pep rallies, and parades. Assist the Band Director in supporting Band Booster Club activities. Assist the Band Director in developing and implementing plans that fulfill the requirements of the district's curriculum program and show written evidence of preparation as required. Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for individual student differences. Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect an understanding of the learning styles and needs of assigned students. Present subject matter according to guidelines established by the State Board of Education, board policies, and administrative procedures. Work cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). Work with the Band Director and other members of the staff to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods according to district requirements. Assist the Band Director in obtaining and using evaluative findings, including student achievement data, to determine program effectiveness and ensure that program renewal is continuous and responsive to student needs. Student Growth and Development Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing. Be a positive role model for students and support the mission of the school district. Classroom Management and Organization Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students. Manage student discipline in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook. Assist the Band Director in accompanying and supervising students during out-of-town trips and activities and arranging transportation, lodging, and meals for out-of-town events. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities. Communication Establish and maintain professional relationships and open communication with parents, students, colleagues, and community members. Budget and Inventory Assist the Band Director in developing and administering the budget based on documented program needs and ensuring that operations are cost-effective and funds are managed wisely. Assist the Band Director in coordinating fundraising activities and managing funds. Assist the Band Director in maintaining a current inventory of all fixed assets related to the program. Assist the Band Director in overseeing the cleaning, repair, and storage of all instruments and equipment. Assist the Band Director in compiling, maintaining, and filing all required reports, records, and other documents. Professional Growth and Development Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills. Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required. Comply with federal and state laws, State Board of Education rules and regulations, board policies, and administrative procedures applicable to the band program. Personnel Management Assist the Band Director with the recruitment, selection, training, supervision, and evaluation of band staff and other program personnel, as assigned. Other Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures. Perform other duties as assigned by the Band Director, principal, or district administration. Essential Function: Attendance Regular, predictable, and punctual attendance is an essential function of this position. The employee must be able to report to work as scheduled, maintain consistent attendance, and perform all assigned duties during established work hours. The nature of this position requires the employee's physical presence to provide direct instruction, supervision, support, collaboration, and services to students and staff. Reliable attendance is critical to ensuring continuity of educational services, student safety, and the efficient operation of the school district. Failure to maintain regular attendance may adversely affect job performance and the district's ability to fulfill its educational mission. Supervisory Responsibilities: Assist the Band Director in monitoring the performance of assigned band staff and program personnel. This position does not have independent supervisory authority unless specifically assigned by the principal or district administration.
