We are seeking a high‑performing Director of Tax Services to own client delivery and team execution within our growing tax practice. Reporting to the VP of Tax Services, this role is the operational and technical backbone of the practice. You will manage a portfolio of client engagements, lead and develop a team of tax professionals, and ensure consistent delivery of compliance and advisory work at a high standard. This is a senior individual contributor and people manager role for someone ready to step into a director‑level position in an entrepreneurial environment.

OBJECTIVES
Client Delivery and Advisory
Manage and review tax compliance engagements for a portfolio of small business and mid‑market clients, including business and individual returns, estimates, and required filings
Lead tax planning conversations with clients, identifying opportunities to reduce liability and optimize entity structure with a focus on actionable, implementable strategies
Support clients navigating transactions, entity changes, and growth events with accurate and timely transactional tax guidance
Build trusted long‑term relationships with your client portfolio and serve as a reliable point of contact for ongoing tax questions and planning
Team Leadership and Development
Manage a small team of tax professionals including tax associates and senior associates, providing direction, review, and real‑time coaching on technical and client‑facing work
Conduct regular 1:1s, set clear performance expectations, and create development plans that help team members grow toward the next level in their careers
Establish quality standards and review processes that ensure accuracy and consistency across all client deliverables
Identify and elevate capacity, performance, or technical issues to the VP of Tax Services in a timely manner
Operations and Process
Own the day‑to‑day execution of the practice workflow, including engagement management, deadline tracking, and workload distribution across the team
Maintain and improve internal systems, templates, and tools used for compliance and advisory delivery
Ensure all engagements are completed in compliance with applicable professional and regulatory standards
Monitor tax law and IRS guidance changes and communicate impacts to clients and the team proactively
Business Development Support
Partner with the VP of Tax Services on client expansion opportunities, identifying upsell and cross‑sell potential within existing relationships
Contribute to new client onboarding by assessing scope, setting service expectations, and transitioning accounts into the delivery workflow
Represent the practice in client‑facing conversations at the director level, including quarterly reviews, planning meetings, and strategy sessions
COMPETENCIES
Strong technical foundation across business and individual tax compliance, entity structuring, pass‑through taxation, and transactional advisory
Proven ability to manage client portfolios independently while maintaining accuracy, consistency, and proactive communication
People management capability with a track record of developing junior tax professionals and holding the team to a high standard
Operational discipline around deadlines, workflow management, and quality control across multiple concurrent engagements
Clear communicator who can translate complex tax concepts into language clients understand and act on
Comfortable working in a fast‑paced, entrepreneurial environment where priorities shift and process maturity is still evolving
Open to using or learning AI tools to improve research, streamline workflows, and scale output across the team
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Required
7+ years of progressive tax experience in public accounting or tax advisory, with a minimum of 2 years in a supervisory or managerial role
Solid expertise across business tax compliance, tax planning, and client advisory including entity structuring, pass‑through taxation, and transactional support
Experience managing a client portfolio independently and serving as the primary client contact across engagements
Strong experience serving small business and mid‑market clients in the $1M to $100M revenue range
Demonstrated ability to develop junior staff and hold teams accountable to quality and deadlines
Preferred
Advanced degree in Taxation (MST or JD/LLM)
Experience in a high‑growth or entrepreneurial firm environment
Familiarity with tax technology platforms and modern practice management tools
Exposure to multi‑entity structures, founder‑led businesses, and pass‑through optimization strategies
