Summary of the Role
This is a role for someone who moves fluidly between analytics andsystems, and who wants to architect and build the intelligencelayer that tells a team what’s actually working .
HHMI's Marketing and Digital Communications team shapes how theInstitute's research, programs, and opportunities reach thescientists, students, educators, and grantees who rely on them, aswell as the general public . That work runs across web, email, social, paid media, and in-person channels. Today the team cantrack performance across each of those channels, but is missingdeep visibility and insight into how audiences move between them, and how effectively content and strategy decisions are payingoff.
You are the person who builds that view, from the ground up. Youown the data systems, the analytics infrastructure, and themeasurement architecture that show how audiences find, experience, and move through HHMI's digital ecosystem. That means standing upsystems that don't exist yet: leading the CRM and CDPimplementation from vendor evaluation through integration, designing the cross-channel measurement architecture, governing UTMtaxonomy and analytics configuration, tracking search and AIvisibility, and building the audience segmentation and dashboardsthat keep the full team oriented. You work in close partnershipwith the Director and Content and Digital Experience Senior Manager, turning what the data shows into decisions the team canact on.
This is not a pure analytics role or a pure systems role. It takesdeep, career-level expertise and comfort operating on both sides atonce: the build capability sets the floor, and the analyticsfluency builds on it.
What You Will Actually Do
Build and own the analytics infrastructure. Design, stand up, and evolve HHMI's digital analytics, including conversionevent tracking, journey dashboards, and UTM taxonomy governance, building what is not there yet rather than inheriting a finishedstack. This is single ownership with active enforcement, not sharedstewardship.
Architect the whole ecosystem, not the channels. Designand build the cross-channel measurement and event-trackingarchitecture, a single view of how audiences move across web, email, social, paid media, and events together. Find the handoffs, the drop-off points, and the channels that are over- orunder-leveraged relative to what audiences actually need, and usethat to steer where investment and content strategy go next.
Run search and AI visibility. Own the program thatmonitors how HHMI and its programs show up across traditionalsearch and AI platforms. Layer the findings to spot patterns, opportunities, and risks, and flag shifts that change what the teamshould do about content and experience.
Architect and stand up the CRM and CDP. Lead HHMI's CRMand CDP from the ground up, evaluate and select vendors, design thedata model and identity resolution, and own the integrationpatterns that tie them to the rest of the stack. Stand up theplatform from scratch, then serve as its primary day-to-dayadministrator. Partner with the Marketing Manager on listarchitecture, segmentation, intake forms, and datagovernance.
Own the integration architecture. Connect CRM, CDP,analytics, email, and the website into one coherent, well-governedstack, with clean data flowing between systems by design ratherthan held together by manual exports.
Build measurement into the website redesign. Serve asthe measurement and discoverability architect inside HHMI's ongoingwebsite redesign, so tracking, attribution, and AI discoverabilityare built into the foundation rather than bolted onafterward.
Run email as real infrastructure. Manage and evolve theunderlying infrastructure of HHMI's email marketing in Mailchimp, including attribution, list management, and integration with theCRM as that system matures.
Build the reporting the team runs on. Give the full team a clear view of how audiences find and move through HHMI's channels, including a real comparison of paid and organicperformance across sources. Present findings regularly andtranslate them into plain insight for non-technical people.
Lay the groundwork for audience modeling. As the CRM and analytics mature, build the segmentation models that reflect how different groups find, evaluate, and act on HHMI opportunities. Audit the behavioral data HHMI already has, and build thecollection infrastructure that future audience modeling willrequire.
What We Are Looking For
Both sides of the house. Brings 8 to 10 years across digital analytics and marketing operations inside a matrixedorganization, and is as comfortable configuring a system as readingwhat it produces.
Insight, not report-pulling. Turns data into decisionspeople can act on. Anyone can export a dashboard. Knows whichnumber matters this week and why.
Builder first, operator second. Has stood up CRM and CDPplatforms, not just administered them, and ideally led animplementation end to end: vendor selection, data model, integration. Running an existing stack is table stakes here;building one is the point.
Thinks in systems. Data models, integration patterns, identity resolution, and governance are how this role approaches aproblem. Builds for maintainability, not one-off fixes.
Fluent where search is going. Knows SEO and AEO andsearch performance analysis, and understands how search visibilityand AI discoverability are converging into one discipline.
Tagging is second nature. UTM taxonomy, campaigntracking, and pixel tracking (Meta Pixel, Reddit Pixel, LinkedInInsight Tag) are familiar ground, and this role is comfortableowning data governance without being told how.
Fluent across audiences. Works across content, marketing, and technology teams, driving standards and changeacross groups not directly managed, and can explain a data findingto a non-technical stakeholder without losing the substance.
Education and experience. HHMI is ultimately looking for depth rather than a fixed number of years: what matters is genuinecommand of building and owning marketing technology systems, digital analytics, and the search and AI visibilitylandscape.
What This Role Is Not
A pure analytics role. This role builds and owns thesystems, not just reports on them.
A pure systems role. Standing up the platform is half the job. The other half is telling the team what the datameans.
An administrator's seat. This is not inheriting a finished stack to keep running. This role is here to build what isnot there yet, then own it.
A report-runner's seat. The point is not simply toproduce dashboards on request. It is to own the intelligencefunction and push it forward.
A single-channel specialist role. The job is to see thewhole ecosystem at once, not to go deep on one channel inisolation.
