Section 01 — The work
We hire reporters who like the doing of reporting — the cold call, the freedom-of-information request, the third interview that finally yields the thing the first two danced around. You will write longform features for client publications and occasional op-eds under principal bylines.
The work is varied. In a given quarter you might be reporting a feature on a community health network, drafting an op-eds for a foundation president, and chasing a single quote that has been the missing piece of a piece for six weeks.
We pay for reporting. Travel and source meals are not a fight — they are the budget. Our writers are expected to read widely and have opinions about what does and doesn't work in the form.
Section 02 — What we look for
01 Four-plus years reporting and writing at a magazine, newsroom, or longform outlet
02 At least two clips over 3,000 words you would still defend today
03 Comfort with first-person and third-person work alike
04 A specific beat or two — civic, foundation, health, policy, science, the arts
05 Willingness to write under another principal's byline when the work warrants
Section 03 — What we don't
We try to be specific about who this role is not for.
- Writers whose strongest skill is pace, not reporting
- SEO-content backgrounds without longform clips
- Anyone uncomfortable with a substantive edit
We read every application within two weeks. We respond to every applicant whose work we read, even briefly. We do not use ATS keyword filters.
