Staff Photo Editor, Digital News Desk
The New York Times is looking for an experienced and agile news photo editor to join our Digital News Desk team in our New York newsroom. You will help guide photographic coverage coming out of our breaking news operation, and will curate the desktop and mobile home screen presentations and our global newsletter products.
You will work closely with the editors on the Express, Newsletters, News Desks and Shows team and colleagues from photo, design, graphics and video. You will work productively, proactively and collegially with staff photographers, freelance photographers and fellow photo editors, and must be experienced and confident in working with wire services, agencies and all other sources of pictures and video, including social media and photographer estates.
In addition to driving the visual curation and presentation of The Times' report of original assigned photography on multiple platforms, you will assign breaking news visual coverage and will be encouraged to pitch and create visual and multimedia enterprise stories. You will also contribute to Live coverage as needed.
You have a strong demonstrable passion for photojournalism and visual storytelling of all kinds, and possess a broad knowledge of the current photographic landscape, including digitally innovative formats and mobile-first multimedia presentations. You have excellent editorial judgment and journalistic integrity and knowledge of photographic usage and copyright issues. You can edit sharply for multiple platforms, produce complex photo assignments, perform thorough agency and social media research, and work quickly and effectively in a large newsroom setting. Early mornings, nights or weekends may be required.
This is a Wednesday - Sunday position based in New York or DC and includes regular attendance in the office two days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance.
Responsibilities include producing and building promotional visual assets for news stories and enterprise content with attention to detail in a fast-paced newsroom, and across a variety of digital surfaces, including the homescreen and live coverage, Listen tab and newsletters. You will learn, embrace and publish innovative and experimental visual storytelling formats. You will own critical editorial decision making in a fast-paced environment, ensuring timely and accurate visual journalism.
Basic qualifications include 5+ years in a newsroom photo editing role, experience assigning and directing photojournalists in a variety of situations, exceptional technical skills, including in depth knowledge of web tools and programs, content management systems, Photoshop, PhotoMechanic, video editing tools, FTP, and social media platforms. Knowledge of responsive design and best practices for building stories and editing images for maximum impact on mobile devices is also required.
Preferred qualifications include an enthusiasm for visual journalism and current events, coupled with keen news judgment and ethics. Strong organizational, communication and collaborative abilities are also desired, along with proven deep research skills, the initiative to take on and learn new tasks, openness to working a flexible schedule as news demands, and experience making quick decisions under deadlines and a high-pressure news environment.
