About Retro Replay

Retro Replay (Retro-Replay.com) is an independent gaming publication that has been covering video games, gaming history, and retro gaming culture since 2008.

We're looking to expand our network of freelance writers and contributors who share our passion for classic video games and the stories behind them.

Whether you grew up playing the NES, Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo, PlayStation, or Dreamcast, or you're a younger gamer discovering these platforms for the first time, we'd love to hear from you.

What We're Looking For

We're interested in freelance contributors who can produce original, engaging articles covering topics such as:

- Retro Game Reviews: Thoughtful reviews of classic titles, forgotten gems, and cult favorites.
- Gaming History: Retrospectives on developers, publishers, franchises, consoles, and important industry events.
- Special Features: Unique stories, editorials, interesting discoveries, and deep dives into gaming culture.
- Interviews: Conversations with game developers, composers, artists, and other figures from gaming history.
- Homebrew & ROM Hacking: Coverage of fan projects, new releases for classic systems, and preservation efforts.
- Retro Hardware & Collecting: Classic consoles, accessories, game collecting, and hardware innovations.

We're especially interested in writers with original ideas and unique perspectives. Contributors are encouraged to pitch their own article concepts.

Qualifications

- Strong written English and the ability to communicate ideas clearly.
- Genuine enthusiasm for video games, particularly retro gaming.
- Ability to produce original, accurate, well-organized articles.
- Willingness to research topics and verify information.
- Ability to meet mutually agreed deadlines.

Previous professional writing experience is welcome but not required. A compelling writing sample and a strong understanding of video games can be just as valuable as an established portfolio.

Compensation & Flexibility

This is a paid, freelance, per-article opportunity rather than a salaried position.

- Shorter reviews and editorials: $25–$45 per article.
- Longer features and retrospectives: $50–$100 per article.
- Compensation, article scope, and deadlines will be agreed upon before work begins.
- Assignments are offered on a project-by-project basis, with no guaranteed minimum workload.
- Work remotely on a flexible schedule.

We're interested in building ongoing relationships with reliable contributors who enjoy writing about video games.

Why Write for Retro Replay?

Retro Replay offers an opportunity to publish your work on an established gaming website, share your knowledge with fellow gaming enthusiasts, and build a public portfolio of published articles.

We value creative freedom, original research, enthusiasm, and collaborative relationships with writers.

Please include:

1. A short introduction and your favorite gaming platforms or areas of expertise.
2. Links to one or two writing samples, published or unpublished.
