Description
The Downtown Branch at Slover invites applications for a part-time Library Associate I position in its programming division.
The Slover is a beautiful venue and multi-use facility in downtown Norfolk with a mission to be a premier destination for residents and visitors to enjoy. The Slover will support a thriving downtown by encouraging tourism, providing resources for entrepreneurs, and housing the Downtown Branch Library at The Slover.

Success in this position draws on the incumbent's competencies in advocating an inclusive and diverse library environment, nurturing safe and accessible library spaces, developing and delivering library programs and reader's advisory, embracing innovative processes and technologies that enhance library operations, collaborating with senior leadership and community partners on holistic strategic planning initiatives, and practicing sustainable resources management within available means.
Departmental Hiring Salary Range: $41,503 - $47,728

Essential Functions

Essential functions include but are not limited to:

  • Provides excellent customer service by assisting with basic reference questions, technology support, and recommending reading materials.
  • Plans, develops, and delivers engaging programs such as educational workshops, film screenings, and creative activities that support literacy and lifelong learning, both individually and in collaboration with staff.
  • Designs and sets up engaging displays and promotional materials to highlight programs and library resources.
  • Assists with collection development by reviewing professional sources, identifying gaps, and recommending new titles that reflect diverse voices and interests.
  • Performs circulation functions by checking materials in and out, reserving materials requests, registering new patrons, coordinating with Interlibrary loans, and collecting fees.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Education/Experience

Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor's degree or equivalent.

One year of experience in library or related services.

If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
  • The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant's school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
