By setting goals for our economy and following through with targeted approaches based on need, we are equipped to drive forward and cement big structural solutions.Building upon our long history and legacy of work in racial economic justice rooted in data, research, and community building, Prosperity Now is serving as the host and incubator of the Black Wealth Data Center (BWDC). The BWDC was conceived and funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Greenwood Initiative, a program area aimed at increasing generational wealth and addressing systemic underinvestment in Black communities. The Greenwood Initiative conceptualized the BWDC to help address the problem of insufficient and inaccessible data on the topic of Black wealth. BWDC’s mission is to elevate data, tools and insights via its world-class data platform. The platform sits at the intersection of data science, technology, and public and social policy and aims to support those, in both the public and private sector, working towards achieving racial wealth equity.Summary:
We are seeking a Communications Manager to join Prosperity Now and work with the BWDC on implementing the strategic communications plan to build its voice in the Black wealth space. This is a unique opportunity for a communications professional with experience working with social impact and data-driven organizations and who can work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment. Our ideal candidate will have a keen interest in social and economic justice issues and the role of data in advancing racial equity. We will look for a demonstrated commitment towards racial economic justice and equity. This position can be based either in our Washington, D.C. office or remotely so long as D.C. remains accessible by train for monthly travel to the office.Accountability:
Reports to the BWDC Director of Operations, with dotted line reporting to the Prosperity Now Chief Engagement Officer. The Communications Manager, Black Wealth Data Center, also is a member of the Prosperity Now Communications Team, and works closely with the Bloomberg Philanthropies Communications Team.Responsibilities:Serves as central point for all BWDC Communications, managing a matrixed relationship structure between Prosperity Now, Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Greenwood Initiative and BWDC to ensure seamless coordination and execution of annual plans and activitiesDevelops and manages annual communications plan in coordination with PN, Bloomberg and BWDCManages refining, maintaining, and growing the initiative’s brand, visibility, and impactCoordinates with key stakeholders and partners on the execution of the strategic communications plan, ensuring alignment of overall goalsOversees communications strategy, audiences, key messages, and channels for BWDCWrites, reviews, edits, and finalizes content for the website, social media, publications, blogs, collateral materials, and other communications channelsAssists in maintaining a consistent narrative and framing across the full communications spectrum for BWDC and in relation to its host and founderCollaborates with key stakeholders, partners, and consultants to organize and manage virtual and in-person eventsProactively builds brand awareness by exploring opportunities for partnerships, branded items, and branded eventsCoordinates proactive and reactive media opportunities and field as necessaryEnsures strong and open communications channels across key stakeholders and partners, including the appropriate dissemination of information to various audiencesHelps in managing strong internal and external relationships, quality control, marketing, and editorialLeads the development and distribution of monthly communications reportingCreates and manage timelines to ensure all deadlines are metParticipates in the implementation of promotional strategiesOther duties as assignedRequirements
Qualifications:Four years of relevant experience; or a master’s degree and two years of experience, preferably in issue campaigns and/or digital organizing and advocacyBachelor’s degree or the equivalent years of experienceDemonstrated commitment to and passion for racial and ethnic economic justice, experience working on economic justice or racial justice – or other social justice related issues preferredDemonstrated ability to understand complex information and effectively communicate them to a variety of audiences, especially across digital channelsExperience in building and maintaining positive relationships, including both internal and external stakeholder relationshipsExperience working in a startup environmentExperience working in a matrixed reporting structure or incubation/host environmentDemonstrated track record in implementing communications plan for impact, preferably in narrative development re dataStrong written communication skills for multiple channels and for diverse audiences, including the ability to create content that ties complicated issues to timely and relevant moments to increase engagement and resonance with a general audienceProficiency in Microsoft Office and a strong technical background in at least one digital program, e.g. email, social media, newsletters, website or blogsWork Environment:
