The Publishing department, part of the David Rockefeller Studies Program, is responsible for editing and producing CFR’s print and online publications and for ensuring editorial consistency across CFR, including its promotional materials and its website. The staff editor works closely with the editorial director, senior editor, associate editor, Director of Studies office, fellows and research associates, and program staff across the organization.

The major responsibilities of this position will include (but are not limited to):

  • Copyedits CFR reports and materials for departments across the organization and ensures editorial consistency in all written and promotional materials;
  • Manages the production for select CFR reports and digital production for online-only reports, including copyediting, proofreading, printing, mailing, and trafficking manuscripts between authors, freelance editors, designers, and printers;
  • Creates and updates publication pages on;
  • Tracks the status of CFR publications for editorial director in Trello and Excel;
  • Performs other administrative duties, including copyright registration, processing invoices, expense reports, and travel approvals;
  • Serves as a resource for all CFR staff on editing, grammar, and publishing questions and providing training in CFR style and editorial practices.


  • Degree in international affairs, English, or related subject
  • Previous editorial experience in a fast-paced environment; at least three years in nonprofit, academic, trade, or web publishing preferred
  • Superb spelling and grammar skills and knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style
  • Superior organizational skills and attention to detail to handle deadlines and multitask
  • Strong proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat; knowledge of Photoshop and email service providers helpful
  • Experience working with a content management system, web analytics, and HTML
  • A flexible, positive, team-oriented attitude
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
