The Director of Marketing is a critical position on the Foreign Affairs Business Team. Reporting to the Chief Revenue Officer of Foreign Affairs, this person will oversee all consumer marketing, event and content promotion across web, email, and traditional mail channels. Working closely with the product team and central email resource, they will have a chance to drive the strategy, creative and audience for a wide variety of marketing campaigns for an influential and highly respected publication. This position has one direct report.

The major responsibilities of this position will include (but are not limited to):

  • Build the strategy for and oversee execution of all Acquisition, Retention and winback efforts for subscription marketing across digital and traditional channels
  • Manage all subscription marketing and testing on FA.com through proprietary paywall, onsite targeted messaging, and customer communication portal
  • Lead the coordination of our subscriber-only virtual events in conjunction with Foreign Affairs editorial and with event partners at the Council on Foreign Relations
  • Oversee strategy, creative, editing, scheduling, and reporting for email campaigns featuring content promotion, branded products, and subscription marketing as well as several automated email series for subscribers at different points in their lifecycle
  • Oversee content promotion for the print issue six times a year and select digital content
  • Drive strategy and own reporting for all marketing efforts through proprietary reporting system, ESP reporting dashboards and Google Analytics
  • Maintain scheduling and project management of all content, subscriber promotion and retention efforts on project management systems (e.g. Basecamp)
  • Responsible for oversight, editing, and spot creation of all marketing copy

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field (e.g. marketing, English/language arts, publishing, or communications) with high academic achievement
  • Eight or more years of related experience in publishing, communications, marketing, advertising or a related industry
  • Five or more years working with subscription revenue businesses or customer lifecycle management
  • Experience with a major email service provider such as SendGrid, Sailthru, Constant Contact, etc.
  • Proven track record with developing a “marketing voice” and quickly editing polished copy
  • Attention to detail, self-starter approach to projects and solution creation who can work independently and return to a team with updates
  • Project management experience that prioritizes quick and consistent communication, reaching across teams, and departments for input
  • High level of proficiency with promotional language crafting, and adobe creative suite, as well as a comfortability with analytics, campaign tracking, and reporting tools (Omniture, Google Analytics, etc.)
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including clear and effective written communication
  • Knowledge or interest in international relations and foreign policy preferred
