The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is seeking a Culture Reporter to write compelling news and enterprise stories that explore and explain how Atlantas unique culture shapes life here and influences the nations lifestyle and pop culture.

Atlantas residents and their stories offer unique opportunities. The city is Blacker, younger, more affluent, and yet more challenged by income inequality and poverty than any major city in the South.

It is a hub for Black, Asian, and Latino professionals and entrepreneurs, new global immigrants, artists, and young activists and influencers eager to reshape America.

Atlanta offers a unique lens on how the region and the country will be changed in the years ahead.

With a fearless attitude, stylistic flair, and aggressive nose for breaking news, this reporter will tell our readers how ATL culture is expressed in our diverse region and across the nation, including through music, traditions, film, performance, and storytelling.

The Culture Reporter will tell stories exploring the intersection of arts, culture, and underrepresented communities, as well as how emerging social trends are being expressed through the lens of the Atlanta aesthetic.

The ideal reporter will have a high news metabolism and a proven ability to write compelling news stories, profiles, and enterprise.
The candidate should also bring a sophisticated understanding of culture, tradition, and the arts, broadly defined — and how they intersect with politics, celebrity culture, race, power, money, and identity - both locally and nationally.
This writer will provide a mix of stories that include deeply-reported personal and business profiles; uniquely Atlanta stories like Beltline etiquette and the new generation of Civil Rights leaders; and news of both national and local cultural flashpoints like the Will Smith slap and the complaint by an Atlanta rapper and ex-mayor that restaurant dress codes in Atlanta are aimed at excluding Black professionals and others.

The ideal candidate will have a style that informs and educates readers in relatable terms, keeping readers rather than sources and politicos in mind. The position will include a mix of breaking and enterprise news and may require some travel throughout the state to report stories.

A strong grounding in journalism, including interviewing, documents reporting and journalistic ethics, is required.

Education: College degree preferred.

Experience: 5 years of professional journalism experience strongly preferred including beat work, may consider 3 years of professional journalism experience if in addition you also have other media experience or internships

  • Demonstrates strong news judgment and clear ability to quickly develop reader-focused story ideas.

  • Handles other assignments as needed, showing flexibility and adaptability.
  • Engages editors on best ways to present stories on digital, print, social media, and podcast platforms.

Other skills:
