Inside Higher Ed (, a young, fast-growing daily online publication and jobs service for people who work in higher education, seeks an experienced and creative person to lead our efforts to build usership of the site.

Inside Higher Ed is a free publication with significant readership already in place. As we enter a new phase of growth, we need an audience development plan that continues rapid readership increases in ways that further our multiple but interlocking business goals.

To succeed at this job, you’ll need to be passionate about the Internet, have significant experience with Web traffic-building and marketing, communicate extremely well, work independently but play well with others, and think creatively about how to get the most bang with limited bucks. Five to 8 years of professional experience preferred.

Responsibilities include:

• Working with editors, sales managers and technology staff to refine existing and develop new strategies for expanding Inside Higher Ed's base of daily readers and e-mail subscribers, and expanding their use of our content, jobs service and other site features.
• Rolling up your sleeves and developing HTML marketing e-mails, splash pages and other materials.
• Using existing (and identifying new) methods -– cost-per-click advertising, site optimization, e-mail, online advertising, viral marketing, and things that are coming around the bend -- to reach current and potential readers/users and draw them to our site.
• Promoting our breaking news content to other publications and exploring syndication partnerships.
• Helping us strengthen our existing measurement tools to better track what works and doesn't.
• Working closely with our sales team to ensure that audience development strategies and sales strategies are aligned.
• Collaborating with the sales team to provide audience data and develop sales materials for potential advertisers.
• Crafting and managing a budget to effectively spend our audience development and marketing dollars.

The job is based in our Washington, D.C., office. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience; benefits include employer-paid monthly health, dental and life insurance premiums, three weeks' vacation, a 401(k), and a lively, supportive work environment. If this sounds like a job you could be passionate about, send a cover letter that specifically addresses the above responsibilities (no dear sir/madam form letters, please) , resume and any additional information you’d like us to consider to Scott Jaschik, at
