E-Content Editor
Island Press seeks a skilled and savvy writer and content manager to strengthen our electronic
content, outreach and marketing. The ideal candidate will be a detail-oriented, creative,
deadline-driven team player who is motivated and excited about connecting diverse online
communities with Island Press’ leading collection of environmental books, along with the
authors and editors that have created them. In addition, this position will remotely manage a
section of the Web site dedicated to disseminating research on aquaculture. This full-time
position is based in our Washington, D.C. headquarters.

• WRITE AND EDIT: Responsible for creating and managing content of Island Press web
site, including news, newsletters, “newsroom”, author/expert database, book web sites,
blogs, and other materials (at least once a day).
• MANAGE AND EDIT: Responsible for work with authors, editors and other staff to
create a regular flow of current content connecting IP books to current events and
breaking news. Connecting authors and content with the press and others.
• CULTIVATE RELATIONSHIPS: Cultivate relationships, post on boards or list servs,
reply to comments on the blog, get Island Press content into online magazines,
newsletters, social and community Web sites.
• E-OUTREACH: Work with communications, marketing and program staff as necessary,
coordinating, targeting, outreach, and posting for specific projects.
• E-MARKETING: Focus on search engine optimization (SEO) - managing content to
maximize Island Press’ position on outside search engines and through links to other
• MAINTAIN/AUTHOR COMMUNICATIONS: Update author/book blogs, podcasts, and
other site content as necessary.
• ONLINE ''PRESS SECRETARY'': Assist communications, marketing and program staff
in targeting online magazines, newsletter, social, community and other web sites to
spread the word on specific projects.
• INTERNET TREND WATCH: Keep on top of the newest tools, trends, and online
• UPDATE ISLAND PRESS' BOOK WEB SITE: Occasionally assist book web team with
web site updates.
• MANAGE AQUAKE SITE: Remotely manage researching and uploading publications
to popular aquaculture web site housed with Stanford University. This will require 50
percent of position’s time. Training will be provided for this responsibility.

Qualifications & Experience
• Understand and be motivated by environmental issues and the opportunity to
create exciting content that will stand out.
• Superlative writing ability and an engaging voice.
• At least two years of experience with e-content or thorough understanding of ecommunications.
• An understanding of the environmental, scientific, policy, press and political

• A journalism, marketing or publicity background may be helpful, depending on
• Bachelor’s degree, preferably in journalism, marketing or publicity.
• Experience with the Microsoft Windows and Office are required. A general
knowledge of Dreamweaver, Joomla (or similar CMS), Photoshop, Fireworks,
FTP and other internet tools is helpful, as is familiarity with database applications
(MySQL, MS Access, MS SQLServer) and the use of Web 2.0 technologies.
