Air & Space Magazine has a rare opportunity for an experienced editorial candidate to join the team in Washington DC. The Associate Editor assigns and edits features, conducts research to support the illustration of features and has primary responsibility for one or more Web departments. Additionally, the incumbent will:
•Carry a feature story all the way from raw concept to final publication. Assign and directs free-lance authors to produce manuscripts for feature articles. Conduct research in support of authors and of the editing process by visiting or contacting libraries and archives, individual experts, trade associations, or academic and governmental bodies. May originate and write feature articles.
•Consult with other editors on story selection and purchase. Support the gathering of materials-photographs, drawings, diagrams that will provide the basis for the illustration of features. Fact check features. Write headlines, caption materials, callouts, and any other internally generated ancillary text in support of the layout. Merge text with layout and copyfits using Quark Publishing System. Write and edit material for the Web site, as assigned.
•May have primary responsibility for one or more departments (front and back matter).

Qualifications and Requirements include:

•Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) from a four-year college or university or high school diploma or equivalent and at least 3 years of related experience, equipping the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. Special consideration will be given to applicants with a demonstrated knowledge of aerospace or experience with airplanes.
•Comprehensive ability to produce stories aimed at a general, rather than specialized or technical audience.
•Experience in all aspects of magazine editorial operations; story, conception, assigning and managing writers in the field; conception of illustrations; picture selection and layout; text editing.
•Experience as a generalist, able to handle any subject matter, but with particular strength in one or more subject areas.
•Ability to rewrite when necessary. Experience in working with illustrations.
•Creativity, imagination, initiative and management skills are essential, as is sound journalistic judgment.
•Excellent written, verbal, research, organizational and analytical skills.
