Writer/Editor Senior, Instructional Content
Job Type Full-Time Summary of Position Work as an integral member of the educational media team in the development and management of the educational resources featured on the award-winning NG Education Web site. Write, review, and edit Web- and print-based instructional content, including lesson plans, activities, interactive, multimedia, and other resources that extend National Geographic's mission, research, and media into formal and informal learning environments. The role includes managing teacher-contributors, freelance writers and expert reviewers, managing an iterative content development process, conducting quality assurance, managing and cataloging digital assets, and strategically planning content based on research and needs assessment. Responsibilities - Write, review, and edit highest-quality, Web- and print-based educational media. Ensure solid instructional design, from concept development to production. Research subject matter and available assets. Work with the project team to conceptualize projects and set format and style. Provide editorial quality assurance review. Provide on-deadline, well-written, well-researched content that is optimized for media format and audience and adheres to the project style guide. Infuse work with creativity and engaging voice. Offer innovative ideas for new content and problem-solve issues as they arise. - Identify and recommend contractors in the assembly of project teams. Hire and manage contract teachers and other idea contributors, writers, and reviewers as needed. Facilitate the iterative development process between team members, including NG staff, contract writers, researchers, designers, reviewers, experts, and partners. Create and track schedules and budgets. Provide guidelines and support to contractors and review deliverables to ensure highest quality. Safeguard NGS brand by ensuring factual and grammatical accuracy, journalistic standards, and adherence to NGS style manual and by policing for libel and plagiarism. - Monitor site and existing content and update as needed. Coordinate and clear rights on digital assets, including text, photos, video, and interactives. Build and manage asset database. Code, upload, and manage content within content management system. Create content reports for cataloguing. - Participate in strategic planning and constant innovation through a research-based design process. Keep up with trends, research, and innovations in related fields and industries, including education, technology, and geography. Identify and prioritize key educational skills, concepts, and topics to target, including through needs assessment and resource gap analysis, and use these to strategically plan content development. Stay current with NGS mission, research, initiatives, and media and leverage these as assets for instruction. - Assist in all aspects of the development and management of educational resources and their dissemination. Support internal and external cross-promotion of site and its content. Create and edit business and marketing documents, project and grant proposals, reports, presentations, and other materials. Participate in and sometimes present at conferences, workshops, and meetings. Supervision Exercised No supervision exercised Minimum Education & Experience Minimum four years professional educational writing and editing experience, preferably in print- or Web-based publishing or multimedia development. Experience in K-12 education and/or after-school programs, preferably with classroom teaching and/or curriculum design experience. Experience working under deadlines essential. Experience managing professional contractors or staff desirable. Bachelor's degree in education, English, communications, or related field; Master's degree highly preferred. Workplace or academic background in geography or geography-related disciplines desirable. Experience with Web 2.0, including communities, user-generated content, public data, and asset sharing a plus. Knowledge & Skill Requirements Strong written, verbal, and digital communications skills; expertise in writing instructional content; proficiency in writing for multiple formats, including Web, print, and multimedia; advanced knowledge of writing principles; engaging writing style that effectively communicates to target audience; formal training in copyediting and editorial coaching. Strong research skills. Strong pedagogical background and skills; in-depth knowledge of K-12 curriculum and the design and development of curricular materials; understanding of education audience and issues in education; familiarity with educational research and research-based design; awareness of educational policy and reform efforts; keen interest in utilizing new technologies to improve teaching and learning. Excellent project management and organizational skills with a high attention to detail; self-direction and motivation; sensitivity to deadline-driven workflow; ability to handle a variety of projects with changing priorities in a dynamic environment. Strong interpersonal skills, including ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and project team members with diverse expertise; collaborative, team-oriented work style. Exceptional creativity; understanding of nuances between media formats and audiences; design skills and sensibility highly desirable. Proficiency in Office suite and html; experience with Adobe Creative Suite and Flash desirable; familiarity with content management systems, database design and management, web analytics tools, and project management tools a plus.
