We currently have a growth opportunity in our Business Media division for a Senior Editor to serve as an anchor contributor to Big Builder magazine -- researching, reporting and writing feature stories and articles for selected departments.

This position will primarily research, analyze, report and write authoritatively on the business and management issues impacting top executives at large-volume home builders; assist in the broader development of magazine projects including special research reports and occasional conference programs; and assist (chief) editor on editing selected articles for publication. This position offers a path toward becoming a future editor.

Major Responsibilities:

1. Feature and Web New Analysis Writer - Research, develop and write 1 to 2 industry trend and/or company case study stories each month. Responsible for:

• Developing contacts and relationships with industry executives. • Identifying 3 to 4 potential feature stories each month. • Researching assigned stories, including interviewing senior executives by phone and in person. • Developing and writing daily news stories for Big Builder and HW web-first initiatives. • Identify, and assist in securing, potential photo/illustration ideas, including working with art director to arrange for subjects to be photographed.

2. Department Story Writer – Research, develop and write – and/or work with freelancers to commission and edit --1 to 2 department stories each month. Responsible for:

• Developing contacts with industry executives and experts knowledgeable about department topics (including: Land development, increasing sales, improving operations, financing, marketing and news briefings. • Identifying 3 to 6 potential department story ideas each month. • Researching and writing assigned stories, including interviewing senior executives by phone. • Writing concise department case study stories as assigned on deadline (600-900 words per story.) • Assist in developing potential photo/illustration ideas, including working with art director to arrange for subjects to be photographed.

3. Assist in the development of Special Projects – Assist in the execution of publication research, special industry reports, and conference programs. Responsible for:

• Helping to identifying new editorial topics that have the potential to enhance the magazine’s reputation and business prospects in the market. • Contact industry executives to research these ideas and/or invite their participation in selected programs and events. • Serve as a coordinator in developing selected projects and/or as a moderator at Big Builder events.

4. Assist in editing department and feature stories –

• Review and edit stories for content, completeness and style. • Work with contributing editors in developing story ideas • Help develop photo-illustration concepts to accompany stories.

Qualified candidates should possess the following: • Education: B.A. or B.S. • Minimum three - five years experience as writer preferably at magazines, newspapers, or Web sites. • Strong writing, grammar, and research skills. • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and on-line services. InCopy skills a plus. • High level of comfort and ability speaking in public as you will represent the publication and Web site in a professional manner in all dealings with industry contacts. • Project management skills • Ability to work as part of a team. • Ability to take initiative when there’s a problem to be solved. • Ability to take direction • Ability to travel several times per year to attend industry trade shows and conferences and to interview industry contacts and experts on selected stories.
