Reporting to the Director of Public Relations and the Manager of Public Relations, the Public Relations Assistant:
-Assists in maintaining the smooth operations of a fast-paced media relations/communications department within a large and active cultural organization
-Answers, evaluates, and directs calls from the press and public on a daily basis
-Assists with story pitching, pre-interviewing and building relationships with the press
-Administrates and contributes to new online media center on
-Tracks press coverage and posts press clips daily on the Library's intranet site
-Maintains physical and digital archive of photos and press clippings
-Writes and distributes monthly library listings press releases as well as occasional press releases for other projects
-Provides new media and digital support for Communications online projects
-Oversees office technology and equipment
-Processes invoices and tracks petty cash and departmental budget
-Maintains office supplies and other department inventories
-Attends library events as necessary and oversees film crews and photo shoots
-Performs related duties as required

-Bachelor's degree in communications or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
-Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, including the ability to deal tactfully with the press, public, and staff in person, on the phone, and in writing
-Knowledge of local and national media
-Meticulous organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
-Successfully demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment
-Demonstrated commitment to public service and familiarity with New York City's history and neighborhoods
-Proficient computer skills for Mac and PC software, including excellent word-processing, spreadsheet, database, calendaring and web skills
-Strong aptitude for digital technology, including familiarity with content management, HTML, multimedia editing (photo and video) and digital design preferred
-Knowledge of one or more of the Library's areas of specialization such as literature, history, art, or performing arts preferred
