National Journal, a must-read destination for Washington insiders, seeks a Staff Correspondent with sharp reporting and writing skills, a new media mindset, and a desire to grow within our expanding news enterprise. National Journal publishes a range of original content, both online and in print, including NationalJournal.com, National Journal magazine, CongressDaily and The Hotline. Position Description:The Staff Correspondent will cover defense, foreign affairs and national security for one of DC's most prestigious readerships. Responsibilities will focus on writing weekly stories for National Journal magazine and daily stories for National Journal.com. The staff correspondent will also contribute occasionally to CongressDaily. Responsibilities will include: -Writing weekly one- or two-page stories for National Journal magazine. -Writing 3,000-word feature stories for National Journal magazine every two months or so -Posting multiple self-reported news items each day on our Web site -Contributing to email alerts and summaries for subscribers -Summarizing key legislation -Providing coverage and analysis of developments in the executive branch, Congress and the lobbying community -Recruiting participants for a blog featuring contributions from outside experts -Recruiting participants for a poll of outside experts -Interviewing newsmakers for online Q&As -Helping conceive and create special reports on the Web -Helping identify outside resources and reports to highlight for subscribers -Writing occasional stories for CongressDaily Qualifications of the Ideal Candidate:The Staff Correspondent must be adept at breaking news, analyzing news developments, and juggling multiple deadlines. The ideal candidate is someone steeped in both the policy and politics of defense, foreign affairs, and national security, with a deep knowledge of how Congress, the executive branch and outside groups interact on the topics. Additional requirements include: -A minimum of 4 years reporting experience-Experience writing about Capitol Hill, the executive branch, and K Street highly preferred. -Ability to develop original story ideas of interest to subscribers-Strong analytic skills-Ability to write forward-looking stories-An interest in working with graphics and data-Strong work ethic and motivation to succeed-A positive, good-natured, energetic attitude-An interest in learning and contributing to the team-A commitment to nonpartisan reporting and writing-Ability to represent National Journal in media appearances and at policy-related events-Adaptable and willing to approach tasks with velocity and a high metabolismCore AttributesAtlantic Media recruits for two personal attributes in its candidates.
