Job description: The art director, working in conjunction with the editor, establishes and maintains the conceptual and stylistic direction for the main publication, ancillary products and collateral to assure that in-house, reader and advertiser expectations for high quality are met.

The art director also provides creative and design guidelines for the art staff and oversees their work, as well as the work of photographers and illustrators.

Follow established guidelines to come up with dynamic cover options for each issue from home and garden photo shoots
Hire, assign, schedule and art direct photographers and illustrators
Photo-style and prop locations and direct photo shoots for well features, ensuring that assignment particulars are met
Design layouts for well features
Oversee layout and production of all stories and departments; review all layouts before submission to editors
Review and approve Schematic for each issue
Establish and manage workflows and schedules to meet prescribed deadlines
Work with edit and production staffs as a team player
Supervise and mentor art staff
Establish and manage art department budgets
Handle administrative paperwork, including purchase orders and invoices
Attend edit meetings and work with editors to determine the design and photo needs of each issue
Procure product, under editors direction, for product shoots. Return or arrange for return of items after shoot.
Select, edit and enhance, when necessary, all photo images
Review and approve all final page proofs
Work with Director of Advertising to place full-page ads
Perform additional duties as required by editor and publisher

Bachelors Degree or higher
Magazine art direction and photo shoot experience
Mastery of Macintosh, Photoshop, Illustrator and CS5. Some Web experience preferred.
Working knowledge of 4-color web offset printing and pre-press fundamentals
Current portfolio with emphasis on magazine, ad design and collateral development
Expertise in reviewing and evaluating color photography and proofs
Ability to supervise, direct and train creative talent
Ability to multi-task and prioritize in deadline-oriented high-stress environment
Ability to read, write and comprehend English with a high level of accuracy
Ability to understand and apply complex written and oral instructions
Ability to speak in a business-professional manner with internal and external customers, both on the telephone and in person. Consistently treat internal and external customers and suppliers with respect and integrity
Ability to drive to, and work at, remote locations, as required
Ability to work well with others in a continually changing environment
Consistently present a positive attitude and business-professional appearance.
Ability to sit and work at a computer for up to 8 hours each day
Ability to accommodate working-hour variations as required for some assignments
