Job Summary:

The Development Editor (DE) will manage a list of article-based reference works in a variety of disciplines. The DE is expected to take projects from concept through to publication. In doing so, the DE will work closely with editor-in-chiefs, volume editors, editorial boards, authors, and internal colleagues including commissioning editors, production editors, and marketing managers. Key responsibilities include managing the DE-EIC relationship, recruiting top scholars to your projects, building editorial consensus through the peer review process, creating and managing expansive headword lists, and reviewing and approving a constant flow of manuscripts.

This position will also be expected to develop content for a major new online initiative currently underway in the reference group. For these projects, the DE is again expected to work closely with top scholars in a broad range of academic subjects and to manage large headword lists. The DE must be capable of working in these two development tracks simultaneously and successfully.

Both job responsibilities will require skilled diplomacy, an acute attention to detail, and a high regard for deadlines and editorial standards.

Job Requirements:

Candidates should have a minimum of three years experience working in academic publishing, preferably in reference or journals publishing. They should be forward-thinking with an awareness of the evolving state of reference publishing and a track-record of initiative-taking. They must be an effective communicator, unafraid of computers, and possess an understanding of the technological implications of publishing decisions (and the publishing implications of technological decisions). They must also possess excellent organizational and problem-solving skills, a sharp eye for detail, respect for deadlines, and an ability to cultivate working relationships with scholars.
