Senior Reporter, Public Insight Network

American Public Media

Location: St. Paul, MN or TBD

Are you are an experienced journalist who believes in independent, in-depth, open-minded and accurate reporting as a vital public service? Are you impatient with he-said/she-said reporting, usual-suspect sources and recycled news? Do you trust that wisdom does not stop at job titles, but extends to the richness of everyday life?

If the answer is yes, keep reading.

The Public Insight Network is looking for a Senior Reporter to join our expanding team at American Public Media. We work in partnership with member newsrooms and citizen sources to produce news that not only informs but engages, not only relays but relates, and not only asks but listens. We believe in journalism that is not just fast but thoughtful. We believe there is more to the story than the event, and that the best journalism is done not apart from but as part of the community.

The reporters we want on our team are drawn to the questions not asked and the stories others miss. They employ state-of-the-art digital tools as a means to better storytelling. They are comfortable working across media platforms and open to new ways of producing and publishing stories. They believe their job is to seek out the deepest diversity of voices, and to both challenge and respect what those voices have to say.

Public Insight Journalism has moved far beyond its origins as a pioneering crowd-sourcing venture. It relies on an invested community of people - sources in the Public Insight Network - who provide ideas, insights and expertise to news organizations around the country, including regional public radio and television stations, online and print media, and national radio shows like Marketplace. (see for more information.)

The Public Insight Network provides tools to do journalism that is more authentic, creative and credible. It opens doors to true engagement with the public and creates listening posts where journalists can get past the bumper-sticker screeds and closer to people's real lives. It explores stories beyond the ubiquitous headlines - stories that tell us not just what happened, but why things happen, why they matter and what we can do about them.

The Senior Reporter we seek is deeply curious and has a knack for conversational journalism. S/he will combine crowd-sourcing, data analysis, social media, video, mobile technology and face-to-face reporting to power distinctive daily journalism and collaborative projects with news outlets from around the country.

You will be part of the Public Insight Network team based at APM's St. Paul headquarters, but will travel extensively and possibly could negotiate a different home base. If you're right for this job, don't make geography a limitation.

You will work at the direction of the Public Insight Network editor and in collaboration with APM's national and regional programming divisions. Some general outreach duties designed to diversify and promote the PIN also are required.

This is a grant-funded position running From September 2011 through March 2013.
