Macmillan Publishers, a leading trade publisher, is seeking a Metadata Manager to oversee the collection and distribution of all core metadata assets including the basic bibliographic and descriptive information for all books and products published by the company. This position will also be responsible for identifying opportunities and putting systems in place for distributing enhanced metadata (such as author interviews, videos, reading guides, sample chapters, and so on) to drive discovery and purchase of Macmillans titles. Digital promotion and sales are a major component of Macmillans publishing program and the Metadata Manager will play a key role in making sure Macmillans books and authors are presented as effectively as possible throughout every distribution, marketing and sales channel.

The primary responsibilities of this position and the key skills someone will need to succeed in this role are described herewith:

Major Responsibilities

Analyze metadata for all titles, identify incomplete or poorly executed data records, and ensure that the data is completed or improved by the parties responsible

Review all marketing assets produced by publishing units to determine how these can be tagged and distributed to maximize discovery and marketplace impact.

Coordinate with stakeholders from a wide range of departments (Editorial, Sales, Publicity, Marketing, Inventory, and others) to review and optimize the workflow for data entry and quality assurance

Research standards for best practices concerning all core metadata assets, write guidelines, and provide training to people who are involved in creating and maintaining metadata

Think strategically and create new opportunities for using our metadata assets to drive discovery in the online space

Serve as key liaison for business partners and customers who receive our data feed and resolve issues as they arise

Work with key business areas to develop reporting requirements

Required Skills/Knowledge

Advanced Excel skills
Excellent analytical skills
Experience working with databases, writing reports and analyzing large volumes of data
Experience creating reports for a variety of stakeholders
Instinctual understanding of process management and proven ability to improve work-flow processes
Strong problem solving skills
Strong attention to detail
Good communication skills and the ability to communicate technical matters to a non-technical audience
Strategic thinking and the ability to identify new opportunities
Ability to take initiative and complete tasks independently under a general directive

Educational Background Required

Bachelors degree or equivalent experience
