Roll Call is looking for an art director with a news background and superior graphic and publication design skills to join the Art and Graphics Department. The Art and Graphics team produces daily and weekly, newsprint and magazine publications with serious, high-quality content for the nation's policy makers and influencers. The ideal candidate will be able to work with editors and reporters to plan and execute page designs, photo assignments, informational graphics and illustrations with a high level of sophistication and that exemplify excellence in storytelling.
Art Director reports to the Creative Director and manages the day-to-day design and production needs of our print publications and web sites. Specific responsibilities include:
- Read story budgets, propose and make graphics, photo assignments or illustrations as appropriate

- Participate in editorial planning meetings and assist with story placement and space planning
- Maintain and enforce design styles as set by the Creative Director

- Contribute or create well-designed, compelling covers, often for hard-to illustrate concept stories
- Design strong, grid-based pages and story spreads that make good use of the editorial news hole
- Create original art including graphics, charts, maps and illustrations
- Assist with data research and fact-checking for informational graphics as needed

- Ensure all layouts, photos and art elements meet pre-press requirements for excellent reproduction
- Contributes to online static graphics and interactive projects

ideal candidate must have a Bachelors degree in journalism, graphic design or similar with 5 years of print experience, preferably at a newspaper or news magazine. Also needed is an excellent command of InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop to produce clean, sophisticated design and art elements. Must have an in-depth knowledge of Mac OS, InCopy, Excel/Numbers.
high level of personal and professional organization to work efficiently under deadline pressure and keen attention to detail and accuracy are required. Must have the ability to stay on top of multiple projects and actively seek out information or elements that will make a good story/page/spread great.

requirements include in-depth knowledge of basic CMYK print-production concerns; ability to prepare files for different presses, paper types and ink densities; and, basic web design and web usability skills. K4 Publishing System experience desired, but not required.
