The Smithsonian Books Editorial Internship offers a unique opportunity to learn about all aspects of book publishing while making meaningful contributions to book projects and building writing, editing, and project management skills. The ideal candidate will be reliable, thoughtful, self-motivated, and academically inclined, with great attention to detail and the ability to work successfully as part of a team.

Smithsonian Books publishes narrative nonfiction books in categories where the Smithsonian's authority is unparalleled, such as history, science and technology, and art. We also produce illustrated books based on our museums and collections.

Major Duties
*Write and edit jacket copy, marketing collateral, web content, and other special projects as assigned
*Research images and sources and track project components using Excel
*Assist Director and Editor with editorial and sales support
*Research and process permissions requests; maintain author rights and production files
*Review, log, and present book proposal submissions; follow up and do market research as necessary
*Respond to general requests about Smithsonian Books, serve as the primary public contact point

*Good communication skills; able to effectively express thoughts and ideas easily in groups and one-on-one
*Professional, courteous manner
*Ability to multi-task and complete complex projects in a timely manner

Education/Other Experience
*Proficiency in Microsoft Office and PC platform
*BA or MA, or engaged in MA degree program
*3.5 GPA

Internship Details
*6 months in duration (February 2011-August 2012)
*16 hours a week, Tuesday/Thursday/Friday, flexible schedule
*Unpaid internship; willing to work with candidates to achieve course credit
