Reports to: Editor-in-Chief

Position Summary:

The Deputy Editor plays a crucial role in the content execution for the brand, acting as a right hand to the Editor-in-Chief in the day-to-day operations. Writing, editing and management abilities are all required, as are organizational skills, imagination and a passion for boating. A keen understanding and enthusiasm for the YACHTING brand is essential.


Responsibilities:

Cover the boating industry for new product releases that are feature-worthy
Propose and execute high caliber content across multiple platforms
Represent the brand to the industry, at boat shows and in advertiser meetings
Help manage and motivate the staff, especially when the EIC is on the road or unavailable
Work closely as trusted advisor and confidante in creating a path for continued growth and in meeting brand targets

Skills Required:

Demonstrated ability to write clearly, accurately, entertainingly and to meet deadlines
Ability to edit submissions for clarity, accuracy and liveliness
Sound judgment and a sense of diplomacy in dealing with management, staff and advertisers
Aptitude for finding stories that support the brand and vision for YACHTINGs continued content expansion across digital platforms
Genuine passion for boating
Experience in testing large boats
Willingness to travel to boat shows and to travel for feature writing and boat tests
Enthusiasm and imagination to apply to content creation beyond the written word (ie; photographs, video, maps, contest and poll creations)
Sound organizational skills
Team-approach to the job and a willingness to work closely with other staff members



Experience and Education Required:

Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism.
5-10 years of experience in multichannel content creation (publishing, journalism, etc.).
Experience with creating compelling messages for different target demographics.
Deep understanding of/passion for Yachting audience segments and activities.
Audience development and subscription strategies experience a plus.


The candidate will preferably also have experience in Adobe CS5.5, InCopy and InDesign applications. An established profile in the boating industry preferred and a substantial if not full-time presence in the Middletown, RI editorial office is essential.
