As Scientific Illustrator & Graphic Designer in the ERG, you would be a key member of a fast-paced energetic team of scientists, educators, graphic designers, film producers, and writers constantly pursuing new initiatives with the goal of bringing cutting-edge research into science classrooms. The ERG develops a variety of multimedia content, including animations, virtual labs, lecture videos, broadcast-quality short films, and print materials aimed primarily at the high-school and college audiences. You will report to the Director of the ERG and support the development of highly visual science education content, including 3-dimensional animations, based on sound pedagogy.

This position will be attractive to the candidate who wants to be able to design and contribute graphics to both print and online products including interactives and is also capable of managing production processes from start to finish. An outstanding sense of graphic design and a demonstrated interest and skills in the visual presentation of scientific concepts are essential to this position.

Responsibilities:
- Work closely with scientists, educators, designers, animators, programmers, and writers to develop science education products for publication on the Web, CD-ROM, DVD, DVD-ROM, print, and other formats, such as the iPad.
- Strive to design products that turn complex scientific concepts into highly engaging visual features, which can be tailored to a range of audiences.
- Conduct the background research required to develop highly compelling and creative visualization of scientific facts, concepts, and ideas.
- Initiate and research ideas for new topics, products, and approaches to scientific visualization for education.
- Participate in the development of scientific computer animations with 2D and 3D graphic tools, using a concept, script, and storyboard process.
- Organize and annotate all ongoing work for easy access and interpretation; maintain a well-organized archive of previous work and of assets derived from that work
- Participate in the visual design and user-interface aspects of virtual lab development by providing input on selecting appropriate authoring and presentation tools.
Use standard tools like HTML, Flash, and JAVA to develop interactive learning modules.
- Assist in the development of illustrations and animations to support the Holiday Lectures on Science television program and broadcast-quality short films.
- Design and develop print/PDF products, including posters, booklets, worksheets, lessons, and books.
- Assist the development of product evaluation projects by helping to organize meetings and prepare reports and publications.
- Manage the entire print process, including schedules, QC, and deliverables; coordinate schedules with vendors and contractors.
- Conduct presentations at professional meetings.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Three to five years real production experience preferred, or one to two years production experience combined with an extensive portfolio
- Bachelors, or equivalent, degree in art, design, or media technology
- Demonstrated skills in creating accurate and engaging scientific and anatomical illustrations
- Experience working with scientists, as well as with reading the scientific literature, to visually interpret data and concepts
- Experience using Maya, Photoshop, Flash, HTML5, Aftereffects, IIlustrator, Final Cut Pro, and other multimedia development tools and experience with digital video
- Experience in creating and managing a render farm and/or using cloud rendering, as well as computer programming and scripting experience
- Experience formatting Web content and website management
- Ability to write, draw, storyboard quickly and iteratively
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as an integral member of a team
- Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail
- Previous laboratory research experience in a university environment; a strong passion for education required, with teaching experience a plus
- Experience working with high school teachers and/or K12 outreach program experience a plus
