As a member of a growing in-house design team in the publishing department of the American Library Association (ALA), you will design magazine spreads, digital supplements, advertisements, e-mail templates, web pages, logos, brochures, and other marketing collateral (for both print and electronic use), while adhering to ALA's high editorial, design, and production standards.

The successful candidate will enjoy a wide array of challenging projects, where learning and creativity are encouraged, and adoption of new technologies and best practices is a priorityespecially today, as e-publishing becomes increasingly ubiquitous and many of ALAs publications have transitioned from print to digital platforms. An aptitude for learning how to design for interactive media formats will help you excel in this position.

Requirements: The position requires an excellent design sense; a meticulous attention to detail; quick thinking; flexibility; and well-rounded print and electronic publishing expertise using current PC software programs.
The ideal candidate will:

Have a minimum of three years professional graphic design and/or editorial magazine production experience and a bachelor's degree in graphic design or related field of study.

Provide a strong portfolio of design and page/web layout.

Have a very high proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 Design Premium (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat, Dreamweaver, InCopy) in a Windows environment. Experience with Zmags a big plus. Working knowledge of Drupal, Informz, XML, HTML, CSS, Flash, and PHP are other highly desired skills.

Possess superior typography skills and a keen understanding of how best to visually interpret editorial and marketing copy. Experience designing infographics a big plus.

Have previous project management experience in a deadline-oriented environment.

Be self-directed and comfortable working both independently and as a team leader, while building positive working relationships.

Have the ability to prioritize and manage overlapping and competing deadlines.

Starting salary from the mid-40s plus an excellent benefit package; salary is negotiable based on professional experience.
