The Opportunity

To oversee and acquire content for a new online digital resource covering all aspects of Design and to manage our exciting academic book programme in Design.

The Role

•Develop, update and implement a strategic plan for the Bloomsbury Design Library – a new digital resource in development which will provide access to integrated text and image content on all aspects of Design.
•Research market trends and develop networks of academic contacts in the area of Design.
•Attend academic conferences in the field to prospect for new business.
•Develop and manage the programme according to annual commissioning targets:
ocommission and assess proposals for new books (reference works, monographs, edited collections, textbooks);
•coordinate peer review and market research so as to progress those proposals to approval;
•negotiate contracts with authors;
•manage timetabling of books under contract;
•liaise with the Production Department to ensure that books are published to budget and schedule;
•liaise with Marketing and Sales Departments for the effective promotion of the list and monitor sales performance.
•Initiate licence agreements with institutional partners (universities/colleges, archives, museums) for images and other content for the Bloomsbury Design Library.
•Generate contacts and leads in the Design field to assist the Journals Editor in the expansion of the journals programme.
•Manage an editorial assistant.

Selection Criteria
•At least 3 years’ commissioning, editorial and project management experience in academic publishing
•Track record in digital publishing and experience in developing and managing major reference works
•Commercial awareness and sound financial management
•Academic background in design or the visual arts
•An understanding of how Design is taught and researched throughout the world and especially in the US
•Ability to foster and maintain good working relationships with authors and editors over long project cycles
•Experience of giving clear briefs and working with designers and illustrators
