We’re looking for people who are team players and comfortable sharing their expertise with colleagues. The candidate selected for this position will work closely with the editorial staff of Governing magazine and GOVERNING.com to continue to make our magazine and website the go-to source for news and analysis on state and local government.


Responsibilities for GOVERNING Finance Writer

--Writing monthly features for Governing magazine, including those with a deep focus in finance as well as the occasional general assignment
--Posting self-reported news and blog items on our website
--Providing coverage and analysis of developments in state and local governments
--Helping conceive and develop story ideas for the magazine and web
--Helping identify outside resources and reports to highlight
--Ability to represent GOVERNING in media appearances and at policy-related events

Additional Qualifications:

Three or more years experience covering public finance, particularly in state and local government.
--Ability to develop original story ideas of interest to readership
--Strong writing and analytic skills
--Good news judgment. If news breaks, you recognize it, sound the appropriate alarms and start writing
--Strong work ethic and motivation to succeed
--A positive, good-natured, energetic attitude
--An interest in learning and contributing to the team
--A commitment to nonpartisan reporting and writing
