Features Editor, Country Living (1577)
We are looking for someone who is a top-notch editor and writer, with at least five years’ experience editing long-form features and multi-story packages, to oversee up to five features a month.
Ideal qualities include:
—a true passion for words and storytelling, and a natural ability to convey emotion through language
—genuine enthusiasm and curiosity about (but not necessarily a ton of direct experience in) decorating and food, as well as the personalities that bring those topics to life
—a knack for service copy that is hard-working, easy to grasp, and enjoyable to read
—talent for crafting snappy display text
—strict adherence to deadlines and getting stories assigned in a timely fashion
—stellar organizational and time-management skills
—dedication to getting to know a story before assigning it, so as to give writers, photo editors, and the art team clear, accurate direction
—the chops to really dissect a story and build it back up (we are looking for much more than just line-editing skills); a keen eye for recognizing what’s missing from text or a layout; the confidence and ability to assign careful revises
—a built-in sense of responsibility and ownership for stories: collaborating with other departments and going the distance with research (including getting on the phone to report missing information as needed)
—an abiding belief that even the smallest caption is important
—strong, smart ideas about packaging, special theme issues, etc.
—capability to direct and inspire a team of freelancers remotely
