The Advertising Sales Representative reports to the Advertising Director, and will work closely with other advertising department team members in order to meet and exceed monthly sales goals. S/he will be required as needed to travel to appropriate trade shows, client meetings and to represent Mother Jones to the media and advertising communities in all forums (frequent and regular face-to-face meetings, email, events, etc).

Compensation for this position at plan, including base salary and commission, begins at $80,000 but is commensurate with experience. The commission plan is not capped in any way and rewards sales over plan.

Major Responsibilities:
•Sell, sell, sell and meet agreed upon revenue goals: build a strong portfolio of Mother Jones advertisers and sponsors through persistent and effective selling;
•Work with the Advertising Director to develop cross-platform ad packages for maximum net revenues and ROI;
•As necessary, work with the Online Ad Management staff to provide performance analysis and insight to maximize ad campaign delivery, client satisfaction and Mother Jones net revenues;
•Remain informed about the state of online/digital technology, print publishing, and advertising sales/media sales marketplace as to be able to recommend programs and solutions for clients to maximize revenue opportunities.

Us: Everyone at Mother Jones works together to do whatever it takes to get the job done and this position is intended to work side by side with the Director to bring the money in. This position comes with a set of existing advertisers to upsell and to continue working with. There is also an expectation to bring in new clients of all sizes. Territories/industries get shifted around when necessary to make sure we are making the best use of all of our time. As an org, we have a strong history of promoting from within and this position, specifically, is built to be open ended at the top.

You: the successful candidate will possess a proven history of meeting/exceeding sales goals; a thorough understanding of media advertising landscape including pricing (digital and print), roles of networks and agencies, ad server technology, digital/print reporting, rate base, paid print circulation, ad specifications, etc.; 2+ years of online/print media sales experience; good written and verbal skills, including interpersonal communication; the ability to set and re-set priorities as needed in a deadline driven environment; and be a strategic thinker and an energetic self-starter. We use Microsoft Excel and Word and I’d love someone proficient in those programs already; SalesForce or other database software a plus. Major pluses would be a current rolodex of interactive agency and/or advertiser contacts; understanding of current and emerging digital technology. And it goes without saying that the person hired will be a team player with the ability to work independently, since this position is located in New York City and our main office is in San Francisco.
