What you’ll do:

The Content Development & Publisher Relations Associate plays a critical role in selecting and licensing content for the JSTOR archive collections. The Associate must effectively communicate the JSTOR value proposition to new publishers, successfully license a minimum number of journals each year within 4-7 disciplines, and maintain ongoing relationships with a subset of publishers. While the Associate will work primarily on growing the archive collections, understanding the full scope of content within these designated disciplines across the JSTOR corpus (including current journals, books, and primary sources) will be essential for contributing to the overall editorial strategy. The Associate will conduct regular disciplinary research, maintain key relationships with advisors and publishers, and understand concerns facing both academia and publishing. The ideal candidate has a genuine interest in advancing scholarly publishing and communications; possesses strong inter-personal skills and is able to meet goals and deadlines; and enjoys working in a fast-paced environment. This position reports to the Associate Director, Archive Collections.

Primary responsibilities:

•Contribute to the strategic expansion of archive collections available through the JSTOR platform, and when necessary, the expansion of current journals, primary sources, and books.
•Invite publishers to participate in JSTOR, effectively communicate the benefits of participation, and successfully negotiate license agreements within established deadlines.
•Research and assess scholarly literature and other content types for JSTOR’s collections based on agreed upon criteria, the organization’s strategic goals, and the needs of the communities we serve.
•Develop relationships with and solicit feedback about publications and content from advisors (librarians and scholars) across academic disciplines. Develop a strong awareness of disciplinary trends in academic research and publishing, and gather market and audience research.
•Serve as the primary contact for a subset of publishers and execute general account management strategy.
•Collaboratively with other units, conduct research to identify potential markets and audiences and understand their research needs. Define business cases for new collections or products, and evaluate the value proposition for publishers. Scope potential content development opportunities from within the scholarly community.
•Contribute disciplinary and content expertise to marketing and outreach strategies.
•Participate in or lead special projects as needed. Responsibilities may include providing reports, maintaining budgets, acting as a liaison to external partners, and contributing to project deliverables.
•Travel up to 20% of the year to visit publishers, develop new strategic relationships, or attend relevant academic and industry conferences.

Your skills:

•Minimum 4 years of experience in the publishing industry, preferably in scholarly e-publishing.
•Experience with licensing content, negotiating agreements, and managing client relationships and expectations (account management).
•Strong research skills and familiarity with online resources for academic research.
•Strong written, oral, and presentation skills.
•Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
•Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail; ability to handle and prioritize tasks with limited supervision; ability to meet deadlines; goal-driven.
