What you will do:
The Senior Marketing & Communications Manager (SMCM) is responsible for the planning, development, and execution of all marketing and communications activities related to two of our services:

•JSTOR’s Primary Source Content (
•Portico, a digital preservation service for electronic journals, books, and other scholarly content (

For Primary Source and Portico, the SMCM manages strategic positioning and messaging and builds awareness, preference for, and participation in the services among publishers, the academic community and other audiences as appropriate. The SMCM must think and act strategically, while also demonstrating the hands-on skills required to develop and execute successful and innovative marketing and communications programs. The SMCM must also work exceptionally well with colleagues across functional units within organizations and with members of the academic community. The ideal SMCM has a passion for marketing and the work we do at ITHAKA, and possesses the leadership and communication skills to create compelling programs that reflect our mission and values and that drive results.

The SMCM works closely with others and as part of the teams responsible for Primary Source and Portico, particularly with the Business Director of Primary Sources, the Portico Managing Director, and the team members responsible for Outreach & Participation Services (libraries). SMCM is a member of the Marketing & Communications Unit and reports to the Director, Marketing & Communications.

Specifically, the SMCM will:

•Craft and execute annual marketing and communications plans for Primary Source and Portico, taking into account strategic positioning, the competitive landscape, our unique value, and any new offerings we may have upcoming. Plans should clearly support specific goals including revenue, participation, and retention for Portico, and should outline clearly the range of tactics that will be used, the budget, and over what timeframe.

•Work closely with the Primary Source and Portico teams to understand the audiences and value of our services; clearly and compellingly articulate the value propositions; and educate others on key messages.

•Work closely with the Primary Source and Portico teams to regularly evaluate the effectiveness of marketing and communications efforts and adjust our strategy and approach accordingly.

•Build awareness of Primary Source and Portico and the work of these services in various communities employing a wide-range of tactics.

•Work independently and when appropriate, with colleagues in Marketing & Communications, to execute on certain tactics and campaigns (e.g. material creation, web updates, advertising, tradeshows, etc.). Ensure that promotions and targeted materials differentiate and clearly express the value of Primary Source and Portico and support the development of the brands.

•Working with others, develop relationships with the academic community and engage them in improving our services. Contribute to decision-making by seeking strategic, market-driven feedback about service offerings and providing a strong sense of brand perception implications.

•Working with others, ensure high-quality branding (visuals and messaging) that is consistent throughout all activities, promotional materials, and events, and that this is effective in developing the Primary Source and Portico identities.

•Pursue relationships with media and bloggers and develop publicity campaigns aimed at positioning Portico as leading experts in their areas of concentration and execute them effectively and in a timely way.

•Monitor the media for Primary Source and Portico, as well as key competitors, and respond rapidly and strategically to communication opportunities and issues that may arise.

•Maintain awareness of developments in higher education and the fields of marketing.

•Prepare regular marketing activity reports and evaluation of activities.

•Establish annual and quarterly marketing goals for Primary Source and Portico and contribute to goals planning for the Marketing & Communications group overall.

Your skills:

oBachelor’s degree in business/marketing or other related field. Master’s degree preferred.
o6 + years professional marketing communications experience; prefer hands-on, progressive experience in an in-house environment with publishing focus.
oSuperior marketing and communication skills and the ability to work across all levels of an organization.
oDemonstrated publicity experience with success in gaining coverage from important outlets.
oAttention to detail and deep hands-on experience in developing marketing programs and executing tactics that drive results.
oA passion for higher education and a creative, entrepreneurial style.
oExcellent writing, project management, and presentation skills.
oDemonstrated ability to direct multiple projects, set priorities, work independently, problem solve, work as part of a team and excel in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
oWorking knowledge of the scholarly publishing and library communities.
oAbility to travel between offices and to conferences and other events.
