Focal Press, located in Burlington, MA, is seeking a Senior Acquisitions Editor signing in the area of photography and managing staff signing in the area of photography.

The ideal candidate would work with the Publisher to identify areas of growth and be able to demonstrate strong portfolio management skills. The Senior Acquisitions Editor needs to be a strategic thinker with the ability to analyze market conditions. He or she would bring a strong sense of leadership, enthusiasm, and commitment to excellence along with a willingness to try new approaches to the business of publishing.

•Strategic development, management, and planning to grow the existing photography list.
•Analyze market trends to formulate market-oriented and customer-focused product development plans.
•Develop and manage 2 direct reports – Association Acquisitions Editor signing in the area of photography and an Editorial Project Manager supporting the area of photography.
•Sign approximately 20 new photography projects per year, with a focus on the following:
otitles that are rooted in practice rather than theory, which falls in line with the overall Focal Press editorial strategy
osigning titles that are aimed at both the professional and academic markets
osigning authors who are professionals in the areas they are writing about
oincludes creation of digital assets where needed
ocan include alternative formats including short form publishing or video
omaintain a balanced portfolio across audience, price point, content type, etc

•Traveling several times a year for conferences and campus visits
oAttend relevant workshops and seminars to keep up-to-date on industry matters and trends, author prospecting, etc.
•Collaboration with the marketing colleagues on social media and content marketing initiatives
oCo-own the relevant content sites with marketing, working to identify new contributors, develop an editorial plan, and increase traffic.
oUtilize social media to connect with relevant audiences, form potential partnerships, and evaluate the influence of potential authors by using tools like Klout.


Proven track record in acquisitions
Experience in strategic planning
Excellent management and leadership skills

BA or equivalent
