The Opportunity
Fairchild Books, a recently acquired imprint of Bloomsbury Publishing Inc., is the premier publisher of Fashion textbooks for the US market, with an esteemed Interior Design list and an expanding global presence. We seek to fill two positions, each an exciting opportunity to help shape the future of our US textbook program

Position Profile
We seek a strategic, organized and proactive publisher with solid management experience and demonstrable commercial acumen to shape the direction of our major textbooks program and play a key role in the development of our digital strategy for Fairchild Books. The successful candidate will be results-oriented and will manage a dedicated team to develop new titles and new editions. Duties and responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

Management:
•Manage an in-house editorial team that includes acquisitions, development and art direction
•Oversee targets and editorial reporting for Higher Education major textbooks
•Advise on and help to implement robust scheduling, tracking and editorial systems to ensure re-editions schedule is timely and efficiently managed
•Advise on digital strategy to align with end customer expectations
•Oversee art direction for lists to align with corporate branding and a leading-edge ‘look and feel’ for Visual Arts

Editorial:
•Acquire new textbook titles for the College program to pre-agreed annual revenue targets; solicit and assess proposals and sample chapters for new titles
•Undertake ongoing market research to inform the direction of the publishing program
•Oversee peer review process
•Monitor book performance and manage the program for new editions
•Prepare acquisitions documents for acquisitions and launch meetings and transmittals to internal and external Development and Production teams
•Negotiate contracts with authors
•Manage timetabling of books under contract: establish a schedule with the authors, monitor that schedule and take the necessary steps to keep the author/project on the established schedule
•Guide authors on proposals and manage Acquisitions and Development teams to ensure final products meet market needs
•Trouble-shoot during writing and development phases
•Oversee Art direction for all titles
•Manage editorial content pre-transmittal to Production Department to ensure that books are published to budget and schedule
•Ensure data for new titles is accurate and up-to-date; input to Senior management with respect to data requirements for textbook program
•Provide information and support to Marketing and Sales Departments for the effective promotion of the list and monitor sales performance to inform publishing strategy
•Identify new opportunities to develop value-added supplements and ancillaries in multiple formats; oversee the development of supplements and ancillaries with the production and ancillary editors
•Attend academic conferences to prospect for new business.

Financial
•P&L responsibility for all titles on Fairchild Books lists
•Annual list budgeting

Selection Criteria
•A minimum of five years’ acquisitions experience in textbook publishing
•Experience of managing a team
•Ability to foster and maintain good working relationships with authors and editors over long project cycles
•Experience of giving clear briefs and working with designers and illustrators
•Commercial acumen

An understanding of how Visual Arts fields are taught and researched is an advantage, as is knowledge of digital publishing.
