We are looking for a sharp Associate Editor to join our award-winning editorial team, which operates the leading news and information websites for first responders. We are expanding into the Military space, and the position is with our new site, Military1.com - which just launched on Veterans Day. This is a great opportunity to take a key role on a high-profile project, with the ability to shape the editorial direction of a new site with big growth potential.The ideal candidate has experience in an online news environment and a keen understanding of how to maximize traffic. You also must have: a generally outstanding sense for news that will resonate with an online audience; creativity in utilizing the online medium to engage users; skill with social media (check out our rapidly-growing Military1 Facebook community here); the ability to write and edit quickly and thoroughly; and an interest in learning about the content needs of military personnel, vets and familites. Military background is, of course, a big plus but not a requirement.This position presents a unique opportunity to grow within a strong, creative editorial department that is on the forefront of b2b online media, including a collective network of almost 700,000 Facebook fans. Read about our success on that front here and here.Qualifications: - A bachelor's degree in Journalism or practical Journalism experience - Experience in an online editorial role (min. 2-4 years) - Solid understanding of and interest in technologies that enhance online content delivery and storytelling - Understanding and interest in data-driven content decision making, and a familiarity with analytics - A creative and experimental mindset for developing new content featuresAnd the usuals... - Command of AP Style, including headline and caption writing - Solid and varied writing/reporting experience - Strong verbal and written communication skills - Good computer/technical skills - A basic knowledge of HTML - A sharp editorial eye and exceptional attention to detail - Military experience a big plusJob Responsibilities: - Post daily a range of articles across all key segments of website: army, navy, air force, marines, coast guard and defense - Regularly write news articles - both aggregation-style items and longer reporting and feature pieces - Maintain appropriate diversity of news content on website - Manage contributors and regular columnists, coordinating and editing all content - Oversee production of weekly member eNewsletter and other targeted email newsletters - Occasional travel opportunities to cover select industry trade shows - Lead social media efforts, including Facebook and Twitter presence - Drive continual development of website by suggesting improvements to editorial features and content capabilitiesThis position is full time with a stock option plan and benefits, including health care, dental and retirement.
