The Aspen Institute:
The Aspen Institute is an educational and policy studies organization based in Washington, DC. Its mission is to foster leadership based on enduring values and to provide a nonpartisan venue for dealing with critical issues. The Institute has campuses in Aspen, Colorado, and on the Wye River on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. It also maintains offices in New York City and has an international network of partners.

The Communications Department is responsible for reporting on the broad work of the Institute both internally and externally, conducting media relations and supporting all branches of the Institute with written materials such as the Institute’s magazine, books, reports, brochures, and more. The team also works to attract external editorial coverage of the Institute’s work and assists with the planning and execution of special events and public programs.

Basic Function:
The Editor at Large manages, writes, and edits The Aspen Idea magazine, the Institute’s blog, and other text for www.aspeninstitute.org, brochures, collateral materials, and more. The Editor at Large also supports the Communications team in its work on special events and live programs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
•Manage and plan the editorial of The Aspen Idea, the Institute’s biannual magazine, under the direction of the Editor in Chief.
•Plan and execute the Institute-wide blog and, as needed, other web content in coordination with the web editor.
•Write and edit articles and feature stories, make assignments on both short and long stories, conduct interviews, work with Institute departments to collect story submissions, work with designers and production

Knowledge, Education and Experience:
•Bachelor’s degree
•Work experience: minimum 5-7 years in journalism, communications, or related area.
•Outstanding writing and editing skills with a focus on details and accuracy.
•Exceptional organizational skills with ability to complete projects and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
•Working knowledge of editorial processes.
•Ability to work independently and well with a diverse group of people throughout the organization.
•Demonstrated ability to work under tight deadlines.
•Web savvy.
•Flexible and versatile work style.
•Superior computer skills: proficient Microsoft Office; desktop publishing or InDesign skills a plus.
