Job Description

The Onion, America’s Finest News Source, is looking for a confident, assertive, and experienced National Sales Planner for our Chicago office. The most competitive candidates will display a strong understanding of The Onion’s unique brand and readership and will ideally have comparable industry experience. This is a terrific job for a highly motivated individual with demonstrated technical skills.


• Prepare and revise national ad sales media plans for The Onion and A.V. Club and ensure accuracy of placement details.

• Build sales presentations and proposals in KeyNote and PowerPoint.

• Assess campaign objectives, taking into account demographic and budget constraints.

• Aid team in managing online inventory for national sales programs.

• Pull analytics for proposals, using comScore and Nielsen systems.

• Assist in filling out advertising spec templates and answering questions about The Onion’s ad specs.

• Assist in researching and developing competition trackers for National Sales team.

• Meet deadlines when creating proposals and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner.


• Sales planning or advertising agency buying or planning experience preferred.

• Ability to work independently.

• Attention to detail a must.

• Excellent communication skills, must be able to think critically about both client need and internal solutions.

• Must be organized, efficient, team player and strategic thinker.

• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, etc. in a MAC platform required. Position is Excel heavy.

National Sales Planner should be extremely organized, flexible and must exhibit the ability to react to request in a timely manner.
