Assistant Fashion Editor
The Washingtonian is hiring a new assistant fashion editor. The lead daily voice on Washingtonian.com's Shop Around blog, this person is responsible for two to three daily postings, developing independent story ideas, assembling product roundups, posting slideshows, and contributing in other ways to the website. While much of the job is focused on images and visuals, a strong writing voice and editing skills are required, as well as a hunger to explore the evolving Washington fashion scene. The job isn't all flashbulbs and glitz: An understanding of lifestyle service journalism, the unique DC professional environment, and the unique approach of city/regional magazines is a requirement for success. This person will also work with our Fashion and Bridal Editor on shopping, fashion, beauty, and style pieces for the monthly print magazine, and be responsible for managing, selecting, and pulling relevant products, as well assisting on photo shoots and with styling—from spring and fall fashion sections to the December magazine and online Gift Guides. The successful candidate should understand and demonstrate clearly the labor, maturity, and organization required to execute large photo and product shoots, especially while balancing the daily deadline responsibilities of the Shop Around blog. Good taste, enthusiasm, and ability to meet deadlines is a must; prior web experience, Washington knowledge, and fashion experience are all a plus—although we're also open to nontraditional backgrounds that can demonstrate relevance, interest, and a strong journalism grounding. This position is perfect for someone with 1 to 3 years of relevant experience. Please submit a resume, cover letter, and three relevant writing samples or links to Mary Yarrison, firstname.lastname@example.org, by December 20th.
