VIA magazine is the 19th-largest circulation magazine in the United States, serving 3 million AAA member households in eight western states. VIA addresses the travel needs of AAA members with award-winning features on destinations, road trips, and food and wine, as well as news and information about AAA benefits and services.

AAA NCNU traces their history to a meeting in 1900 of car buffs at San Francisco’s famed Cliff House. Recognizing the need for better roads, signage, and auto-friendly laws, these car owners formed the Automobile Club of California (ACC) to deal with barriers that hindered acceptance of the automobile. In 1907, ACC merged into the newly incorporated California State Automobile Association (CSAA), which formally affiliated with the American Automobile Association (AAA).

Today, AAA NCNU continues providing services to millions of Members. They are also proud to be a leading advocate for safe and responsible transportation, a proponent for alternative fuels and vehicles, and a provider of traffic safety education to diverse and underserved communities. The future hold expansion into other lines of business such as AAA owned car care facilities and commercial insurance.

Job Summary:
This position develops and manages editorial content for VIA’s print and online publishing efforts, working with nationally known writers, handling stories from conception to publication, ensuring that every piece meets VIA’s rigorous standards for quality, fairness, and information.

Essential Functions
•Serves as the regional editor and club liaison for the Oregon/Idaho issue of VIA, helping draft that edition’s editorial calendar, making many creative decisions, tracking feedback/reviews, and overseeing quality control.
•Serves as main “member news” editor, translating AAA benefits and services into captivating, enlightening, and useful magazine content. Develops close relationships with AAA colleagues and stakeholders.
•Collaborates closely with a co-editor to create VIA’s On the Road front section (a combination of regional travel stories and member news). Creates department lineups that balance budget realities with the needs of members in three geographical footprints. Writes compelling display copy. Provides art department with effective photo lists and map and illustration direction.
•Conceives and edits features, managing stories from idea to publication.
•Reviews incoming articles, commenting on appropriateness, thoroughness, use of language, clarity, accuracy, sensitivity, and organization, and suggesting improvements or questions for the writer.

•Expert knowledge of all aspects of magazine making

•Excellent command of the English language and the ability to express oneself clearly and forcefully in writing, in person, in formal presentations, and over the phone
•Strong planning and problem-solving skills to successfully shepherd complex projects to completion
•Ability to articulate criticism, clearly and diplomatically, of other people’s work
•Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with colleagues and others in a professional and tactful manner
•A comprehensive understanding of strong, effective magazine and communication design (preferred)
•Sound judgment and diplomacy to thoughtfully handle challenging decisions and communications without excess supervision

Education & Experience / Licenses & Certification
•Bachelor's degree in related area or an equivalent combination of education and experience
•6 – 10 years in magazine or online publishing
