At the USO, you can do what you love for an organization you believe in.The USO is currently recruiting for a Publication Design Specialist.The Publication Design Specialist will use layout software to assemble text, photographs and other content in an aesthetically pleasing and easy-to-read arrangement for various newsletters and ON PATROL magazine. They will also produce these pages as press-ready files for various printers.The specialist will be asked to help create and plot the course for the visual brand of ON PATROL magazine and the USO’s newsletters, as well as helping to keep the ON PATROL website content fresh by uploading content to the ON PATROL website.RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIESNEWSLETTERS:The USO produces five newsletters in three different formats targeting four different audiences—donors, staff, volunteers and Congress. This role includes working to fit copy into any given newsletters’ format in an attractive layout that reflects the audience receiving the newsletter. This position may be asked to compile short pieces of no more than 100 words on occasion and will always be expected to read copy to get a sense of the articles as they relate to design, as well as to note potential edits.Work collaboratively with ON PATROL vendorsON PATROL:ON PATROL is the magazine of the USO. Through ON PATROL, a quarterly publication, the USO works to inform, educate and entertain. Our audience ranges from donors and active-duty troops and their families to veterans, defense officials, Congressmen and interested civilian parties. The page layout specialist will be responsible for using layout software to assemble text, photographs and other content in an aesthetically pleasing and easy-to-read arrangement that takes into account the tone, feeling and intent of the article, both features and departments. This will be done while managing the brand vision and sensibility of ON PATROL.The specialist will keep tabs on design trends and work with editorial team to incorporate in ON PATROL as appropriate as well as help editors maintain editorial voice, consistency, and standards across written USO products.Finally, the specialist must work collaboratively with Publications vendors.REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONSMust have a minimum of 3-5 years of page layout experienceMust be currently working as page designer/production design with newspaper or other periodicalMust have solid knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite; familiarity with AP style and editing marks preferredKnowledge of editorial process, to include content creation, content management systems and user interaction in an online environment preferredFamiliarity with web metrics terms and reporting preferredHigh proficiency with InDesign and PhotoshopMust have experience working with an art production team and senior editorial staffExceptional attention to detail and the ability to effectively and efficiently multi-taskMust be able to maintain a balanced design on controversial subjects while remaining culturally sensitiveFamiliarity with basic HTML, blog software, content management systems, and Web 2.0 toolsSome travel for training possibleMust be a strong advocate of the USO's mission to support active duty military and their familiesDETAILSThis position is located in Arlington, Virginia.
