THE JEWISH MUSEUMJOB DESCRIPTIONDATE: December 13, 2012DEPARTMENT: Marketing and CommunicationsTITLE: Press Officer SCHEDULE: Full timeREPORTS TO: Director of Communications FLSA STATUS: ExemptSTART DATE: January/February 2013 THE JEWISH MUSEUMWidely admired for its art exhibitions and education programs that inspire people of all backgrounds, The Jewish Museum is the preeminent U.S. institution exploring art and Jewish culture from ancient to contemporary.PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Work closely with the Director of Communications, the Communications Coordinator, and public relations consultants on strategic and proactive press and media relations (i.e., non-paid editorial) for The Jewish Museum – exhibitions, public and family programs, special events, and institutional news. Interact professionally and productively with members of the press and media, museum staff, trustees, volunteers and visitors as well as community and government leaders, diplomats, the general public, and honorees and celebrity guests at fundraising events.•In conjunction with the Director of Communications plan and develop strong, effective campaigns to publicize the Museum, its programs and activities through non-paid, local, national and international editorial channels across all platforms, including print, electronic media, and web with an emphasis on proactive placement of significant advance press coverage.•Write press releases and pitch letters in coordination with relevant departments (curatorial, public programs, shop, etc.). •Proactive follow-up with press and respond to selected press inquiries.•Maintain and build professional relationships with press and media including key bloggers. Provide information on museum policies, procedures, programs, exhibitions, and special events to journalists and bloggers. Contribute to building effective contact lists of international, national, regional, and local press.•Draft bi-monthly status reports on current and upcoming press outreach, placement and strategy, including publicity spreadsheets identifying specifics of media commitments. Assist Director of Communications in preparing reports on Museum’s press activities and publicity for Board and Committee meetings. •Help plan, produce and execute press previews and other special events for the media including annual Museum Mile Festival.•Coordinate TV and news photo shoots in collaboration with other communications staff.•Update the “Press Room” on the Museum’s website with the Communications Coordinator.•Work with the Communications Coordinator to develop a new system for an up-to-date publicity archive.QualificationsB.A./B.S. Degree in a related field or relevant combination of education and experience.Minimum of 5 years of significant professional public relations and communications experience preferably in a cultural or educational institution.A proven track record of successfully delivering print, broadcast and online media results. Must enjoy and be effective at pitching to journalists. In-depth knowledge of and relationship with the media, specifically art and culture media (key writers, editors, producers.)Exceptional writing, proofreading, fact checking, and telephone marketing abilities as well as administrative skills.Knowledge/study of and experience with art, art history, Jewish culture.Creative, strategic and entrepreneurial thinker able to execute accurately and resourcefully in a demanding environment with tight deadlines.Intelligence, good humor, flexibility, positive attitude, and excellent interpersonal skills essential.Experience with Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint applications, Photoshop as well as internet savvy.
