POSITION SUMMARY: Lead the travel team in producing travel-related editorial content, print and digital

REPORTS TO: Executive Editor

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
•Propose and edit travel features and roundups, working closely with other editors, photo editors, and designers to hone story concepts, develop packages and present information that’s visually stunning as well as useful and fresh
•As part of the core senior staff, collaborate on cross-departmental stories and issues
•Manage department of three to five editors, plus freelancers
•Oversee and top-edit monthly travel department in the magazine
•Oversee and top-edit special quarterly sections such as Inside Bay Area, Inside Seattle, and Inside SoCal
•Work with sunset.com team to integrate print, digital, and social media initiatives.
•Foster and maintain West-wide contacts in the travel industry; focus on western travel trends to advance Sunset’s leadership position in the market
•Promote the company in media appearances (radio, TV) as well as at industry events
•Collaborate with marketing department to create partnership opportunities, ensuring they correspond with Sunset’s editorial mission

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:
•Top-notch story editor with experience assigning, editing and vetting reported stories
•Creative magazine maker, with experience shaping complex story packages
•Excellent project management skills; ability to keep many moving parts on target and on deadline
•Collaborative work style and ability to team with writers, editors, and designers to develop and shape stories and packages
•Mentor who can provide vision to a team as well as delegate, motivate, and coordinate work done by others
•Experience with developing online content to extend a brand
•Professional presence and ability to represent Sunset at industry and media events
•Ability to communicate clearly, tactfully, and courteously at all levels
•Knowledge of the West—the more, the better
•Minimum 5 years experience at magazine/online titles, primarily with travel focus
•Minimum 3 years supervisory experience
