Duke Magazine is the university#s flagship publication, with a circulation of 120,000. The magazine upholds the highest journalistic standards in showcasing the intellectual dynamism of a community of engaged, interesting, and accomplished faculty members, students, and alumni. The managing editor coordinates all phases of editorial development and production of the magazine and establishes and implements editorial procedures to ensure publications are completed in a timely manner.

Work Performed

Contributes to editing all copy and ensures adherence to the highest journalistic standards

Plays a major role in issue planning, including identifying story ideas for the feature component and conceptualizing the content for various standing departments

Conceptualizes the content and signs off on the overall look, navigation, and features of the
magazine#s website, issue-by-issue online presentation, and social media postings

Does occasional staff writing

Coordinates the ongoing design process, including overseeing the work of the magazine designer and approving page layouts

Coordinates production details, including schedules, with the printer

Oversees production details of the inserts that showcase the various professional schools

Conceives and monitors adherence to complex production schedules, including ensuring respect for deadlines

Provides direct supervision to the staff assistant on business functions of the magazine, including tasks related to circulation, distribution, billing, payments, and advertising

Supervises and coordinates the work of student interns

With the editor, establishes and sustains contacts among administrators, faculty members, students, and alumni

Performs other related duties incidental to the work described herein
