General Responsibilities

The E-mail Marketing Specialist/Writer develops and executes innovative e-mail strategies to ensure that all Alumni Association messages use best email practices, align with Institute messaging, meet alumni needs, and target appropriate audiences. This position requires writing email, frequent blog posts, and alumni profiles. Reporting to the Editorial Director of Communications, the E-mail Marketing Specialist/Writer works with program staff throughout the Alumni Association as well as communications staff in Resource Development, and the Institute departments, labs, and centers to shape email campaigns consistent with the Alumni Association communications strategy to meet audience needs and program goals. Will develop recommendations for the strategic use of email and will regularly test the functionality and quality of email messaging to ensure the highest open and click through rates.

Characteristic Duties

•Create, develop, and implement innovative email campaigns for Alumni Association programs and services that meet audience needs and program goals.
•Write new email copy, edit existing copy, determine target audiences, and tracking, monitoring, and reporting results.
•Contribute to the social media community by writing for existing Association channels.
•Develop a strategic plan for communications, marketing, and advertising email campaigns using a high-level understanding of information about programs, services, and MIT news that all alumni need and want from the Alumni Association and the Institute.
•Create specialized messaging for segmented email audiences.
•Lead cross-departmental project teams to design and produce interactive media for use in email campaigns.
•Analyze existing MITAA email marketing patterns and recommend changes to improve effectiveness. Test and implement recommendations.
•Regularly test email campaign quality and effectiveness using split testing, tracking open rates, click through rates, fall off rates, etc.
•Provide reports director on email traffic tracking applications and trends; recommend improvements or changes based on results.
•Working with designers to prepare necessary graphic files for emails, create and test email templates for Alumni Association program groups.
•Develop partnerships with other communications stakeholders in departments, labs, and schools to implement best practices in email communications for all Alumni relations and fundraising related matters.
•Other duties as necessary

•Position requires a bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, or related field.
•5+ years of work experience in marketing, web development, electronic communications, or project management. At least 1 year of experience managing e-mail marketing campaigns. Functional knowledge and some experience with HTML/CSS and other web editing and formatting skills.
•Some experience with marketing automation or e-mail campaign management software such as iModules and a content management system such as Drupal.
•Detail-oriented person with the proven ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, working independently and as part of a team, and who has a tendency to over-deliver on expectations.
•Excellent organizational skills with ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects accurately and within deadline and budget.
•Solid writing and oral communication skills essential.
•Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate effectively with individuals in all levels of the organization, and to engage with a diverse group of donors.
•Entrepreneurially minded self-starter with an innate creativity who instinctively takes ownership of a project. Flexibility and openness to new ideas required
